Anybody going to upgrade in June/July? :P

I have been researching a good computer for a few months now and I have come to realize that if I were to get one now, I wouldn't be able to upgrade it very much since I want Intel and the new standards are coming out. So I am almost certain that I am going to grin and bare until the new motherboards with the new chipsets come out. I plan on getting an LGA-775 cpu with 915p chipset because of the DDR1 capability. Unfortunately 925x is looking to be quite the loser, because it requires super expensive DDR2 and limits overclocking to a mere 17% from the latest reports. I haven't heard anything that says the same will go for the 915p chipset but I hope to god that won't be the case. As for the video card, with the new PCI-Express standard, I will most likely be going with, the native PCI-E, X880XT.

What do you people think about my plan?

Feel free to recommend or criticize anything. Also I would like to know what you are planning, if anything.

You plan seems fine . . . but be flexible as choices become clearer.

I just completed my upgrade (March) for probaby the next 2 years - 'till June/July '06. 😛

I figure my 2.80C @3.3Ghz will last till next year when the last of the NW's should o/c to ~4Ghz . . . which should hold me till the cutting edge hardware you buy will be commonplace (and cheap)

I also believe the 6800u (or x800xt) i purchase next month will also last till then . . .

I always buy a little behind the curve.... Cheaper certainly.... Better drivers, bios updates, etc......And I still get a kickin machine.

I'm waiting until year end. If anything, I'll be building a new server out of an Epia 1.2.

Yeah, I'm gonna be building some systems for people, and will probably get rid of my current case, cpu, and mobo for something newer. I'm looking more at athlon 64, but am keeping an eye on intel as well, and will spring for whichever fits what I want the best. I'm looking to upgrade to a 6800 Ultra or X800XT but am having trouble choosing, because the 6800 could gain ground with a good driver update, whereas the x800 will probably not. Also, if the 6800 performs well on nforce 3 250 boards then I might have to go for that. Will be glad when they finally bring out the new stuff.

I'm going to be upgrading my mobo/cpu "soon".

I'm waiting till we have some solid 939 motherboards w/ PCI express (I'm assuming that PCI express mobos will be shipping before the end of summer).

actually I've come to appreciate buying into older hardware standards recently. For example, my Intel D875PBZ mobo isn't totally supported by FreeBSD. If I had put some more thought into it, I probably would have gotten a board based on one of the 845 chipsets.

Now I'll have to just wait until it's better supported.

Then again, if you're using Windows, this is a non-issue as Intel supports Windows. However, try to keep in mind your goals when purchasing hardware.... I've learned that the hard way several times now.

im about to order a mobil barton 2400+ and stuffs to replace my now dead Xp1700+, ithad a good run, i figure if i OC teh crap out of it it will keem me in teh game till AMD has some really solid A64 stuff with PCI_X support and such, also 64bit windows may be out by then which would rock even more

Like I said in another thread, I got tired of waiting, and don't think the new stuff will make much of a differance. I'm an Intel/Nvidia fan boy, so I stay with them.
The rest of my parts arrive today, and I build this weekend.
Abit IC7 Max3, P4 3.4c, Thermalright SP-94 heatsink, Enermax 92mm Fan (adjustable), 1gig Corsair PC3200LLPro (leds), Leadtek 5900XT, Antec case with clear side, Antec 480 True Blue PS, SB Audigy 2, Adaptec 320 SCSI controller, Seagate Cheetah 72gig 15k HD, Sharp LL19A 19" LCD monitor (16ms).

The video card is a budget choice for now. I don't play games at 1600x1200 with all eye candy. To be honest with you, when I look at the screen shots in the FS articles, I can barely see the differance with AF on. Some have a better eye and it means alot. To me, winning the game is what matters. I turned up the detail on Halo and all it did was make the walls look shinny. If that matters to you, fine, but I don't care.

The highest res my monitor will go up to is 1280x1024 native, so that's what I'll play in. If you read the FS articles, you'll see the budget card is right there with the $500 cards in the lower res with eye candy off. In 3 months, I'll buy a Leadtek 6800 as the prices come down a little, but I'm sure the budget card will do great for $189.

Right now, it takes me 30 seconds to join a map in UT2K4. When the map is Torlan, I spawn, and I'm the only one in the base, all vehicles gone, first node already taken. I'm not waiting months to fix this, I'll be first into the map with this new computer. Plus the other game I'll play is Vengeance which comes out later this year. It's modeled after the UT2K4 engine, so I'm all set. I remember the old Q2 days when my computer was fast, I was always first into the map and got the goodies before anyone else.

I'm definitely upgrading... I been running my Dual Xeon 2.4s for about 1.5 years and my current Dual Xeon 3.2 with 1MB L3 cache for a few weeks.. waiting for something with PCI Express.. not that I care but I want something in the 4Ghz range

I just upgraded in March, should last me 2 years, that means I'll prob. upgrade at the end of this year . 😱

I'll just see what's the best out there when it's time. I'm even considering a A64 solution w/ pci-xpress. 😱

This will be a good year for upgrades, w/ new standards.

Regards,
Jose
