Edit: On second thoughts - there don't seem to be many motherboards in that price range that look any better so I may just go ahead and order. I'm not sure it's worth using slower RAM now that I've found 4GB of 2200MHz Kingston HyperX for only £90...
Uhh, what voltage is that RAM? You WANT 1.5v RAM. Otherwise, you can burn out your chip.

Here's my build if I were to buy a SB rig:

Add on two non-existing-at-the-moment GTX 560s and there's my micro-cruncher/portable gaming rig for LAN parties. Also need a SSD/HD and CPU aftermarket cooler.

OK, at 4.4 ghz, my 2600k is doing a 2684 at 42 minutes a frame for 21,812 ppd.

Where were these 45k ppd number coming from ?

Edit: I went back and it was on a 6900. Still sounds way too high. was supposed to be 45k@3.4

I thought it was supposed to be 32k at 3.5GHz? I've not seen 45k mentioned.

OTOH I've often had strange (either very high or very low) PPDs on the first WU, which then corrects after that WU is submitted. I think it might have something to do with Stanford sending out test WUs to newly installed clients. I hope it increases for you soon.

The numbers I saw came from overclock.net. They are starting a database with WU ppd for SB chips.

This guy Digigami is reporting 24 min TPF on a 6900 WU @4.9 GHz

Are these numbers w/ or w/o GPUs running? Any more data?

Will 1155 SB really beat my i7 920 @ 3.99?

I'll probably have to wait to see how 2011 does or later chips :(

SB is ~ 10% faster clock/clock vs nehalem, so your i7 @ 4.0 is like a 2600k at 3.6. typical OC is ~ 4.5 on 2600k, so you should get 25% more work done. not enough for me to upgrade, especially with BD and 2011 on the horizon.

Well, I call BS on that thread about SB PPD on bigadv. I finally got one(6900 unit). My CPU is at a very stable 4.4 (3 days on a 2684, after OOCT stable), and now I got a 6900. I am getting 32 minutes TPF for 33,000 ppd. They said theirs was getting 45k ppd @ 4.5. Way too much difference for me.

I think that may be due to your GPU clients. Someone posted at hardwarecanucks that they dropped 10k on bigadv when crunching bigadv + 2 GPUs as opposed to bigadv only.

When I crunch a bigadv on my 950 with my GTX 580 running, the penalty hit is quite small. The only reason I don't run it full time because the heat it generates is insane.

There are NO GPU clients on my 2600k. Besides, I have proven many times, that in XP, it makes no difference if you have GPU or not, it takes no cpu.

Just a small update for all you Sandy Bridgers...

Finally completed the the SB build this past Sat.

Ran into problems trying to load Win 7 onto the SSD. Took about 2 hrs in which there was enough of a "power-on" window that Win 7 finished loading. Was getting power-ups & power downs. Suspect it was a bunch of things until I remembered that I replaced the EVGA 8800GT card in the Q6600 box with an EVGA 460, whiched solved the shut-downs I was having with the Q6600 at the time.

Picked up a Zotac 470 card at the local MC and after adj cables because of this beast of a card and fired it up. This solved the startup-shutdown shuffle so currently pc is humming at 3.4ghz (no o/c yet) and d/l'ed a ton of Win 7 updates plus ESET Nod A/V, Cpuz and PC wizard 2010, etc.

The cpu is being cooled by a Zalman 9900MAX - it looks like a bagel, the 135 size fan being the "cream cheese".

On Jan 17th at 18:58 UTC fired up the GPU to run 6.30r2 Fermi F@H s/w - results so far:

Project Min/steps
6805 1:38
6805 1:39
6806 1:30
6806 1:30
6806 1:30
6806 1:30
6805 1:38
for a total of 9,232 on a non-o/c'ed 470 gpu

The reason for using the gpu first is that I'll need to learn how to safely O/C this new pc since it's the first time I'll be messing with that and to look up what I need to do to start up this box doing BigAdv (already have the passkey from stanford)

Until the next update...

Just posted an update in "No more -bigadv WUs :(" thread in this group on what I've got the i7 2600K box doing for bigadv smp and on the Zotac 470 gpu

I installed my 2600k got it at 4.5GHz (35k PPD avg). I'm pretty impressed with it, I don't like the delay in earning points with these longer WUs though! I'm wondering whether I can (eventually, later, when I have cash) ;) put three of these in it:

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...FROZRIIOC.html

Still ironing out my sporadic BSODs, but I think I've nearly nailed it.
Edit: Hey! I landed my first bigadv!:D:cool:;)
