i got accepted a couple of months ago and i am thinking of going there. The problem is, i heard mostly everyone in that school commutes. Thus, everyone goes home in the weekends and the weekend life is kind of dull. Any of you guys dorm there? i am planning to dorm, if i go there. Hows the weekend/social life in campus?

One of my good friends goes to Stony Brook. He does say it gets pretty empty on the weekends but there is still a good amount of people on campus to still have fun. Apparently there's a lot of places to go that are near the campus as well so if you do get bored you can just take a bus somewhere or walk if it's a nice day/night.

I'll update with more specifics when he comes back from being away on AIM.

I graduated stony brook in 2005. i hated it there. yes, everyone goes home every weekend. it's like a ghost town there. I'd say it's mostly white people. Your classes will depend on your major. Yes, I dormed there as well until my last year.

You can get a single now easily if you prefer one. Making and friends and such depends on your personality type, what major you're in and how well you plan on doing.

To me, the true sciences were too hard for the 'prestige' of the school. Comp Sci was really hard, relatlivey, and people refer to it as a killer major.

No partying on eastern long Island except all the way out to the Hamptons and then only in the summer when school is out anyway.

I go there now and I commute.

Predominantly Asian students that you see walking around campus. Good programs academically. I have a friend and her brother dorms there as a freshman. He enjoys it, but says you better get to know the people in your building or you're not going to have a good time.

I'm pretty sure the statistics are ~20% asian. 40% white.

went to SBU. you're right there is no life on weekend. i'd rent an apt somewhere between LI and NYC and commute to school, and go home on the weekends.

i remember stonybrooksucks.com as well. i hate to say it, but i missed school.

That may be the case, but you always notice an Asian presence because they're always travelling in packs or standing around in groups.

Well taht's hardly true for just asians. If you go to G quad, you're guaranteed to see a congregation of white people sunbathing or playing volleyball. All the baseball players live in G and they're usually white.

I'm calling it how I see it. Typically around campus, non-Asians seem to mix into groups much more than Asians. Walking around campus, I almost always see groups exclusively of 10-15 Asians hanging out in front of the buildings my classes are in.

And according to CollegeBoard, it's 29% Asian, 32% White/Non-Hispanic.
