My family and I went on vacation to L.A. just last week. While there, my wife and I decided to apply for a job (she's an RN and I'm an EI). Luckily we both found a job and were accepted. We told our prospective employers of out situation, i.e., selling our house, transferring the kids to another school, moving, etc. and they understood.
However, we're also thinking of visiting Houston in August to see what Houston's got to offer. Since most of our friends are living in Cali, we're thinking of biting the bullet and move to Cali.
My question is: For everybody living in that area, what is the cost of living there and how much does a property cost (at an average)? Is the public school system any good? We need your input on anything/everything. TIA!

It's not great. If you're looking for a house, be prepared to spend $500+ for a 1700-2300 sqft house in a not-great area. The schools are not great either (part of the infamous LAUSD). The only nice part of North Hollywood is the NoHo Arts District, a small area with lots of community theaters. Kind of trendy area with lots of aspiring actors and "cool" people. If you can afford it, Burbank & Studio City are nice and in the same area.

noho has a lot of nice new buildings going up, but i haven't been looking at actual properties. one of my coworkers bought a townhouse in noho recently for 600k (a bargain.)

the noho arts district is the nicest part of it, everything else is at your risk and you must asses the neighborhood. i like burbank more.

yeah, that's what our friend told us. Burbank is another place to consider. My wife liked Torrance when we visited one of our friends but I think its far from our prospective work place.

In terms of what? job opportunities, cost of living, school system, cost of properties, weather, etc.

Or, its a hole as a whole?

9.3% state income tax, North Hollywood = valley = sweltering heat, valley is also known as "the armpit of LA"
And with the shvtty traffic, I would not recommend you move to LA. Try Austin.

If you don't have a problem dropping $700k for a house, I say move to LA. If you can't afford $700k for a house, look somewhere else

Isn't North Hollywood the porn production capital of the world?

At any rate, I grew up on the other side of the Valley in Granada Hills. North Hollywood has been rather scummy as long as I can remember. There are much nicer places to live within driving distance.

You're talking of Chatsworth and Van Nuy.

Funny that you mention Grananda Hills... my friend's parent's have a nice house in Granada Hills (Knollwood area) and about 5 years ago, a porn company or porn director bought a house across the street. They remodeled the place and made it huge, but the exterior/landscaping has gone to hell, and all the windows are covered... I wonder what they're doing in there? :)

NoHo should be very nice in 18-24 months. Lots of old cheap apartments and retail buildings are being torn down and new luxury apts and condos are being put up. Their is also supposed to lots of new retail centers being opened along with these developments.

Why not Orange County instead? I was gonna move to West Hollywood but decided that Orange County was a better choice.

I'm sorry, do you not LIKE having any money? I'm sure CA is nice and all, but I could NOT stand paying the kind of money it takes to live there. Jeebus

The commute would eat his gas tank alive. The drive back and forth would drive him nuts.

Yeah but its just such a waste. Not to mention you get to live with earthquakes & the knowledge that eventually you $500K cardboard box will fall into the ocean.

Why are so many east coasters bitter about the west coast?

I'm not bitter, I just can't imagine paying those high living costs, boosted salary or not. Its just so f-in stupid. Unless your job field is primarily located out there, I just don't get why people would want to live there.

My wife is from Torrance. Trust me, if you are working in the Valley you don't want to make that commute everyday.
