Anybody found WinXP SP1 is more sensitive to overclocking?

I installed Service Pack 1 for Windows XP Pro last night, and whilst the installation seemed to go fine, a few hours later I got a fatal stop BSOD - MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (0x9C) Not long after I got another, then another until it was happening almost straight after booting. I tried to search the M$ knowledge base but found no information of this error, but obviously I was beginning to think it must be related to the installation of SP1, since my machine had always been very stable before. Now, I am overclocking, but not by much - I've got a 1Ghz Athlon running at 100x12, pushing it to 1.2Ghz (I've only increased the multiplier, not the FSB, as the latter does cause some instability). Eventually I found that if I reduced the multiplier to 11 (ie. so my CPU was now at 1.1Ghz) the error seemed to go away (at least, hasn't happened since). I've got pretty good cooling - a GlobalWin FOP 38 with the infamous 7000 rpm delta fan, and my CPU temp rarely goes above 40c. My only conclusion is that something in SP1 has made my machine more sensitive to overclocking, and I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this, or could often some advice? Cheers :)

I've got 3 Intel systems here, all overclocked and all with XP SP1. I haven't had any problems whatsoever and seem to have slightly quicker boot times. I would say added stability, but, since I never expierienced a BSOD with XP without SP1 I won't!;)

No problems for me....It has been 2 days since I installed it and I have been using it pretty solid and not one error...I even installed it at my 1.136ghz overclock....

Only errors I have ever gotten from winxp has been when I oc'd cpu too far without appropriate vcore, or oc'd memory to 444mhz ddr and ran prime95 with too low of vcore....Only oc related....WinXP from the beginnning has been very stable for me.

This is a good thread. I'd like to hear from some more AMD owners out there before I take the SP1 plunge. I'd much have rather have a faster rig than a new service pack if it's causing problems with o/cing! :)

Err... if anything causes you to experience errors, could it be you overclocked too much? I deliberately ran the worst tests to expose any errors or instability in my OC'ed P4--now I know it is rock stable and error-free. (And not a squeak from SP1.) After all the testing passed flawlessly, I backed off by 3% to have a safety margin. I recommend the same, unless you just want a high overclock and don't care about errors or instability.

I have SP1 on my main system (P4 1.6A overclocked to 2.4) and I have not encountered any problems since applying the service pack. My system has been rock stable.

Thnk its your cpu.
I was using a P700@933 for a while and suddenly it started becoming unstable. Can't get more than its default now.
Nothing to do with o/s other than an install of XP with any pblm in hardware will cause install to quit.

Simple way to check . . .

Set your CPU to default and see if there is still instability. If so, then your O/S (or at least SP1) should be reinstalled.

If not, your O/C'd system is unstable. Find out where it is rock stable and keep it there.

OK, thanks for all the answers. Seems from what you say that it's either a co-incidence, or perhaps I need to boost my v-core settings. I do have it at default voltage, so I'll try upping it slightly and see if that helps. What would peeps recommend for an Athlon T-Bird running at 1.2Ghz (12x100) ?
