If you are a full time student, do they actually require you search for a job during unemployment? I've heard mixed information. The book that was given to me kind of skips over this subject. But when filling out the paperwork, it asked about school, how many hours a week I go and so on.

This is in the state of Georgia by the way.

Edit: Just to clarify, I have 3 months of school left. Really crappy schedule. I doubt anybody would hire me due to my schedule anyways. So I plan on riding out unemployment for the next 3 months.

It is different for every state. Here in Tennessee you have to apply to a certain number of jobs every week and if you are offered a job, you have to take it (provided the pay was close to what you were making) otherwise you risk losing benefits. But then again there is nothing that stops you from applying to jobs you are totally unqualified for.

When I was in college I was only asked "are you looking for work and are you available to work." Nothing was specifically asked about being in school. Since I was able to have a full time job while in college then I don't see why I would answer no to either of those questions if I lost my job.

Why would students get special treatment? Did you previously get laid off from a job, or are you just looking for your free handout?

I thought you had to be recently laid off to qualify for unemployment. Were you working before? And if you were working before, why can't you work now?

You are correct, here are the rules / laws:

How do I qualify for unemployment insurance benefits?
There are several qualification requirements, but these three are critical:
You must have earned enough money in the base period to set up a claim.
You must be unemployed through no fault of your own.
You must be able to work, be available for work, and be actively seeking work each week you claim benefits.

How long must I have worked to establish a claim in Georgia?

Your claim is based on insured wages earned in the base period, which is the first four of the last five calendar quarters completed at the time you file your claim. You must have earned qualifying wages in at least two of the four quarters in the base period

Was working for Circuit City for almost 3 years. They closed the store. Layed off with no severance. And was personally bent over the table for them for having to work my last day on x-mas eve.

I just kind of figure they would consider it more beneficial for the economy for people to go to school rather than get a bs job.

Economy full of uneducated workers > educated workers?

Here as well. Since in most cases, school interferes with the ability to search for work, or may keep someone from taking a job if offered, MOST states won't let you collect unemployment while going to school...especially if you're a full-time student.

Georgia has a program that helps people who were laid off go back to school. I was a week from starting this program back in 2002 when I was laid off from my first job before I found another job.

Check the Georgia Department of Labor website. Just about all your answers are there.

Well, they gave it to me. I'm just wondering if I get special treatment for putting down that I am a student is all.
