I took a job and will be moving to that area, or somewhere near. I was just wondering if anybody had any tips on the best/cleanest areas.

Indiana? If so, my bro heymrdj would be familiar with the area.

EDIT: I see you listed the location as indeed IN. I'll tell him to stop in this thread :p

Yo. South Bend is a pretty nice area to live in sans the ghetto (goes without saying) and the college area. The NW side is pretty decent, and I'm pretty sure the NE is regarded as the cleanest/highest living. You can certainly tell it driving through it. Like Fort Wayne, avoid the South West side especially if you are of a particular ethnicity. The city is fairly racially charged so unless your north side I highly recommend staying in doors at night. Crime is a little above national average but not too bad. The cost of living is great and comfortable housing with nearby resources can be found and good to great prices. The cost of electricity and gas/oil for heating is fairly affordable compared to other areas as well. I would highly recommend coming up here and looking around awhile getting to know the area if you can afford a few days. I'm getting ready to make a move from the Plymouth/South Bend, IN area to Fort Wayne for a job and to get my girl into IPFW so I kinda know what's going on up here though i certainly know everything.

Good info, thanks. So the complex I'm looking at is about here:

Seems to be in between the NW and NE, closer to NE. Given your info that would be a good location.

Are you talking about The Pointe Apartments. It's near the intersection of 933 and Lasalle about where your A is. That place is very excellent, I drive by there multiple times a week. Alot of good nightlife in the area too. A really nice shopping center with Kholes and BBB and a HHGregg is nearby there within like 2 miles, lots of fast food and higher eschalon dining as well. Don't hear of much crime there either, though there are some violence crimes and tagging going on at the industrial area further east. But that's a safe distance away to stay out of that mess.

Yup, the Pointe. Good to hear. Seems to be the best option and an alright price for what looks to be fully furnished apartments.

I'm from that area and personally I'd live in Mishawaka or Granger over SB. They are all so close it really doesn't matter, but the area is less congested and imho can be a little nicer.

Plus for any kind of shopping you are going to drive to Mishawaka anyway.

Oh, yeah. I saw your post so clarified the IN part and forgot to reply to you. Whoops :D

Look into Granger. It is just north of South Bend and has several nice neighborhoods. I lived there for approximately 5 years in the Knollwood subdivisions.

Oh I'll probably be in Chicago quite a bit. I have a friend who took a job in Chicago, and another who took one near Valpariso, IN so we'll all be doing stuff in chi-town on the weekends. I'm pretty excited :D

I'll look into it, but I don't want to get TOO far east of South Bend as I'll actually be working west of it in New Carlisle. I mean I don't mind the longer drive, but the winters aren't pleasent... and for now I don't have a very winter-ready vehicle. Shortest distance would be best as long as it isn't a crime-ridden hell hole.

Plus house prices are falling like rocks in Granger. There are 3 houses in the neighborhood I live in on the market for silly low prices.

All the towns mentioned are like 5-10 minutes from each other. I live in granger and it's about a 15 minute drive to get to downtown SB (except on ND game days). Also the road crews do good jobs around here so snow usually isn't a problem.

Hell you could live in Niles, MI and still be 15-20 minutes out of SB.

I hope they stay that low for at least another year. I'd love to buy and not rent but no bank would let a fresh from college kid buy a house without some history of loan repayment. I figure a year of paying student loans will help with the rates on a car and/or house.

If you're working in New Carlisle, have you looked at living in LaPorte? there are some nice areas there, too.

I didn't catch the New Carlisle previously. Yea I would say to look at LaPorte, Valpo, chesterton (maybe), or Portage over SB.

What about Mishawaka? LaPorte is so small it has very little complexes listed, and none of them are reviewed well. I know Valpo and like it enough, but it'll be an hour drive to work. I'm not willing to do that with that weather with my car.

Mishawaka, SB, and Granger are all going to be about the same driving distance to New Carlisle. Each city is right on the toll road and a straight shot that way, or you can quickly jump on the 20 bypass.

So if you are ok with the driving time from SB, you will be ok with the driving time in Granger or Mishawaka.
