Anybody ever use a data recovery service?

Well, it finally happened and I was stupid enough to not have backed up my work in the last few months. I was greeted with the sound of heads meeting platters when I took my laptop out of suspend tonight. I called a data recovery service and they're saying it could be anywhere from $400 to $1600 to recover the data, plus the $100 fee to figure out what's wrong. Obviously, my work is worth it, but is it a fair price? Can anyone recommend a good one they've dealt with?
