namely books...half.com only gives you a little over 2 bux for shipping the package (which really sucks since i live in hawaii). i sent my 2 past orders via usps media mail. do you think that's fair? i don't want to have to cover the costs of priority mail which would probably take about $10 out of my pocket. i figure since the people that bought it from me chose media mail, that's what they will get...

I put some stuff up on half.com, but they never sold. I didn't want to carry the inventory so I just swapped over to ebay and unloaded them quick. half.com would be fine if you had the shelf space to wait for a buyer to find your book.

I helped my mom use Half.com to sell DVD's. She's sold over 200 DVD's on Half.com. She gets the DVDs (new and used) for cheap at yard sales or large flea markets, then I put them on Half.com. She recently got $25 for a copy of "Babe, Pig in the City" that she paid $6.50 for. She also recently bought a boxed 007 DVD set for $40 and sold it on Half.com for $73.

So she buys the DVD's, I list them on Half.com, she updates the prices (if need be), and I mail them off for her...plus I get a cut of the profits;)

Pretty good place to sell books and DVD, but the commission is high.

Yeah, the commission is a BITCH!!:| But you do get reimbersed for shipping.

She's been asking me to take her over to eBay to list DVD's, but I told her that I don't have time to make up an auction page for EVERY DVD she buys. With Half.com, you just enter in the UPC code and a price and you're done listing the item. All the pictures and descriptions are taken care of for you.

Half.com makes $$ on both commission and shipping. For example, they will charge the buyer $2.25 for media mail shipping a CD/DVD, but only reimburse the seller $1.75. Normally this is enough to cover it but sometimes with a double disc + bubble mailer it goes over. Nonetheless I still sell all of my DVDs there.

The bad thing is, you have to keep your price extremely low just to sell it, and the high commission just hurts it more. Almost zero profit for new items.

i hope the buyer doesn't give me negative feedback because the book will take 4-6 weeks to reach there...haha. yea, books are great to sell on half.com because you can get back more than the bookstore at a University would give. also great to buy because they will almost always be cheaper than the used books at a uni.

of ALL the books i've sold on half.com, only ONE person left me feedback. :( don't worry about it.

a quickie tip - if it's something REALLY light, like a dvd or cd, sometimes its cheaper to ship first class. just ask the post office.

Books too expensive at UCLA? Is the bookstore huge?

the bookstore is huge and has all the books you need. it's just that i'd rather to sell my books on half.com so that i can try to get as much of my costs back as i can instead of selling it back for a dollar. WOOOO a whole dollar.

or getting a good used book off of half.com instead of paying 75% of retail at the bookstore when the books are all messed up. but its just the conveinence factor and knowing you're getting the right book.

yes, half.com is the best, I have bought and sold about 15 books there. Yes, commission is the major downfall, but unlike Ebay, there are no insertion fees and no time limits on how long the book can be there. I will never buy a book or sell a book back at the college bookstore, unless its printed by the University and some crap thats only available there, because its a major ripoff. I can't believe so many people are too lazy or strapped for cash that they sell back hundred dollar books for 15 or 20 dollars when they can get a lot closer to what they initially paid, online. Why is everyone in this society so hell-bent on instant gratification? I could see if you are pinching pennies here, but we all know that most college students have mommy and daddy to help them out and that quick dollar wont do too much good toward tuition cost as a whole.
