Anybody ever file an extended warranty claim with their CC?

So I bought a laptop over 1.5 years ago and it basically died. From what I can tell it was the motherboard. Standard manufacturer warranty lasted 1 year. Luckily I bought it with a CC so it extended the warranty.

Now does the CC company repair/replace the laptop? If so, how long is the return time? It's a discontinued laptop according to the manufacturer (Lenovo e520) and the repair may cost more than a new one.

Or do they just refund me the original or depreciated price?

Just wondering if anyone had any experience with this process before I initiate the claim tomorrow since their offices are closed at the moment.

you need to find your warranty and read it...not all warranties are created equal.....
If you bought your extended warranty from the place where you bought it and NOT from the company whose brand it is...you will not see a full refund ever.....

I only did this once, for a $30 printer. I think I e-mailed them a copy of the receipt (bought it originally at B&H Photo, online) for proof of purchase. I never had to send them the printer or have anybody look at it, they just gave me a $30 ($29.99 to be specific) credit to my account not too long after (5 days or so) I put in the claim.

Edit: This was on an American Express card

No but I always wondered how these things work (and even if they do).

I called the toll free number of my CC and they told me it was covered but the claims office was closed so I'll see how it goes tomorrow. Usually most CC's VISA/Mastercard/AMEX/Discover will extend your warranty for up to 1 year past the manufacturer warranty.

I tried it once like 20yrs ago with a pair of sunglasses I broke. They wanted me to fill out tons of paperwork and provide a witness that the glasses were indeed broken, how it broke, where, etc...I was like FUCK THAT! all that for like $200. I did go thru with it. Hopefully it's more streamline than that now.

I buy most all my large items at Costco. They pretty much double the manufactures warranty. I bought a 42" TV that came with a one year warranty. Buying it at Costco gave me 2 years and then a third year because I put it on American Express. Toward the end of the third year the TV died. I called AE. Filled out some paperwork, and within 30 days they sent me a check for the full amount (less shipping). I still have the old TV here. I love Costco!!

Did you have to provide any repair estimates?

I bought my iphone 4 on my AMEX blue card. The Home Button started acting up (Would have to push it 6 or 7 times to get it to respond) after the Apple warranty period expired.

I emailed a copy of my receipt to AMEX and they credited my account the purchase price of the phone 1 week later (around $325 IIRC). Still have the phone and use it pretty much as an itouch...

so.... amex just refunds the money for warranty claims? No return or proof of repairs needed?

Are you cereal? Do they track this? So if someone buys a laptop with a 1 year warranty and then does a warranty claim 2 years later they can essentially have a free laptop?

Well I used Discover and they basically sent me forms to fill out. One of the documents to send them is a repair estimate from anywhere. Didn't know AMEX just gives you the price of the item without repair estimates.

I think there's a cap per year on warranty claims.

For those of you sending in a receipt as proof of purchase did you still have the actual original or did you use a print out of one of your statements?

Yeah, I was surprised at how easy that was....then again, that was my first ever claim with them...

There is a thread about it somewhere in the All Things Apple sub forum...

Yes for a washing machine. They covered the part and we paid for the labor.

I smashed up my Nexus 7 on the pavement. AmEx agreed to pay for the repair cost, but not the cost for a new one. I had to send them an official repair estimate.

The repair cost was $185, or about $100 less than a new one plus tax in Canada. I had already bought a new one, so I ate the extra $100 myself (which is fair I think). Actually it cost me more than that, because I also had to pair for shipping to the Asus repair depot, and that cost me around $20 IIRC. Asus shipped it back for free, unfixed after I declined the repair.

AMEX has come through for me on claims.

Accept no substitutes if want want "pain free". Use AMEX. Period!

So I need a few things for the claims:

Claim form
Billing statement from CC
Itemized receipt from retailer
Original manufacturer's warranty (complete warranty)
Itemized repair estimates from a service provider such as the manufacturer, retailer, or repair shop.

Now I have most of the stuff I don't understand what they want with the original manufacturer's warranty? Like they want a print out of the warranty coverage from Lenovo's site? I also have printouts of the warranty coverage period that was on the laptop.

Now are there any good places to get an estimate on laptop repairs for free in Socal? I just googled Best Buy and it seems they charge $35-85 to provide an estimate.

So the cheapest repair place that would offer an estimate was $90 for "diagnostic fees".

They basically concluded the Motherboard was dead and it would require $400 for the part and another $600 on labor fees/taxes for a total of $1000 or so.

Filed the claim and now it's going to take 5 business days to review and another 7-10 for final approval.
