I like to cruise in the gaps of traffic where there are no cars for like half a mile or so. So, I was going 85~90 MPH in the fast lane in a 65 zone freeway on 101 in CA. (yeah I know) It was late at night and not that many traffic (well in terms of SF bay wise). I was watching my rear view mirror (it is your friend) and notice that no other cars were coming up at all. And I notice this car tailing me for a while, he was not that close but I felt something in the air ... and I ease off a bit and just cruised. Then he gunned it right to the right of me. I see his front steel raming bumpers and it was a patrol car no doubt~! He then flashed his flashlight into the car at me and took a somewhat long look at me and at the car. I of course look back at him to acknowledge him. I thought I was toast. I thought about pulling the hand brakes and all, but skipped that knowing that wouldn't be the safest move. For some odd reason I didn't do any major braking and only slowed down a bit to ~80MPH.

He tagged along me for ~10sec and then goes to signal to turn to the next right lane. I was sure he was going to signal for me to get on the shoulder to give me a ticket. BUT..... then he took the next exit off the freeway. I tell you, it's the weirdest thing.

It didn't seem like he got my car license number and no way got my driver's license. Did I get off easy or will I be expecting a ticket in the mail in a few weeks? Is this the future of speed ticketing???

You wont get a ticket.

If this was last (sunday) night. I was doing about 115 on 680 south at the same time, yeah, I know it's too fast, but there were no cars and i wanted to get home already.

I probably woulda been in jail if i got caught.

Amen, brother.

I just got one last month, and I didn't see the cop behind me with the cherries on. He finally pulled up beside me, and waved me over. He thought I was trying to evade him (even though I didn't speed up) and gave me a lecture for like 15 minutes. He didn't drop the speed at all either. (39 km/h over)

I'm taking it to court, and I was reading the paper the other day and I see the guys name who pulled me over... turns out the cop that gave me the ticket is the SARGEANT.

I'm screwed! He's gonna make an example out of me! :(

Funny; you speed, then admit to it publicly; and your icon is even a policeman...uh huh. I tend not to like people who speed, even if there's little or no traffic. Other variables exist, like animals who love to race cars, or falling things.
Not intending to flame or anything, just posting a few thoughts, that's all. :)
Guess he didn't feel like getting someone for speeding that night. Course, he could have gotten a call for backup somewhere else, or maybe a calling from his stomach requesting food.

What kind of car were you driving that attracts some many tickets?

Nope, just a lowly IT guy in SF. I can change the icon if it makes you feel any better.

no, he was just telling you what a tard you are and to slow down. you didn't do anything to piss him off (like braking suddenly/freaking out/making a driving mistake). probably just a warning and to let you know you were busted. next time he may not be so friendly.

it's also entirely possible he had a call right as he was about to get you so :)

He stare for a few second and i nodded my heard to acknowlege him, and also let go of the accerator but didn't brake. Then he just looked back on the road and left. HE was a nice cop:D .

All of my speeding tickets were in my first car, a 1986 Olds Cutlass Calias. Nothing super special looking. I've gotten hammered so bad by the cops... oh well, I'm going to sleep... :(

kaiotes: 101 during the day is hell. Anything else is "not that busy". :)

I notice that the exit he took was like the last exit for the city we were in. Is it possible that he was not allowed to patrol beyond his way points and headed back?

Don't worry BlueIce, he was just letting you know that he 'knew' you were speeding and you didn't 'know' he wa there. Since there was no traffic and you were of little danger to anyone else he just let you go.

I had a very similar thing happen years ago when the National speed limit was still 55 mph. On night I was on North 610 loop East in Houston doing about 90 mph in my '66 Shelby just having a good old time when a car pulls up nest to me. It was a cop and he flashed me with his side light. I looked over and he had turned on the inside light. He motioned for me to slow down, gave me the thumbs up, and then he sped away. Now I know the only two reasons i didn't get a ticket was because it was late and because of what I was driving. I have been pulled over several times in my Shelby but I never seem to get any tickets!

BlueIce - Was it a police car or a CHP car? Police don't have jurisdiction on the freeways. They can scare you into slowing down, though. There are also a few exceptions which I can't remember. CHP, however can pull you over wherever and whenever they see fit. A friend of mine made the mistake of rolling stop sign right in front of a CHP officer b/c she didn't think he had surface street jurisdiction. Oops. :D

Also if you were in the Valley the cops there have more to worry about than people speeding in the middle of the night.
