anybody ever change the bulb on their dlp?

I have. It was the whole light housing. Just pulled old one out, slide new one in and it worked like a champ. Best money every spent to make TV new again 🙂

Just don't get your fingerprints on the bulb. While your in there see if you can dust out the fans or clean the filter. 🙂

Coworker just did his and dusted out like ericlp suggested, he said it's like night and day and took him no time at all.

Super easy to do - and the new bulb is much brighter than the old one. Went with a OEM Phillips bulb.

Should have done this sooner.....

I replaced the bulb twice in my Samsung. The original bulb lasted just under 3 years. Bought a third party bulb which lasted a year (around $100). Then another after a year for $70. Sold the TV and went with a plasma. I would recommend sticking with OEM bulbs after my experience. As mentioned above it's easier than expected, especially if you replace the housing.

/sidenote I really wish they made a panel that was 50-51" instead of 47" or 55" or I may have gone with an LED backlit TV. However, I've had my plasma a week or so and couldn't be more pleased. It'll take me a month to try out all the features (SmartTV, DLNA, USB multimedia support). I also bought from Amazon and received a $30 credit as the price dropped since my purchase. I was able to get $300 cash locally for the old TV (4.5 yr old Samsung 720p Slim DLP)

I'm on my second bulb in my 2003 model Samsung DLP. It's got a LONG way to go to match the first one. The original bulb lasted over 18,000 hours.

It was very simple to replace, though. Now the color wheel that shattered the next day after I replaced the bulb....THAT was a huge pain to replace. Basically had to disassemble the whole TV.

It may depend on the TV in question, but I didn't find tearing apart my 2006 Samsung DLP to be too troublesome. The hardest part is probably finding a good place to work on it. The components that display the image on the screen weren't very large and slid out as a single unit, and I assume they don't get much larger even when the screen does.

Although, I'm not sure if you can call the DLP's repair-ability an actual benefit over other TV types. 😛

I purchased a replacement bulb from Amazon for a Panasonic PT50LC14. The replacement bulb was not quite as well built, it had plastic in a handful of places that were metal on the original. I also tried it before the original bulb died (I purchased it early just in case) and the replacement bulb was not as bright as the original bulb that had 3500 hrs on it.

Just my experience, the bulb works and looks good. Just not great. It was also only $65

Replaced one in my Mitsubishi 62. Was watching basketball last spring and poof.. Luckily, I had a spare used one upstairs that I put in the TV and it came on bright as ever. Replace the lamp assembly, not just the bulb, and its much easier to do imho.

finally got around to doing it. Huge difference...it's like I have a new TV. It's not oem, so we'll see if it lasts as long as the original (which lasted 6 years).

I ended up buying a new bulb as well (no housing). I was watching TV, and I noticed that dark scenes were rather dark when I had overhead lights on. While DLP has always been a bit worse with ambient light hitting the screen, this seemed worse than what I've seen in the past or on my downstairs DLP.

I bought the TV in November 2006, so I guess the bulb's longevity has been good.
