i went to a therapist in high school whenever i realized things about myself that i didn't want to continue doing. it helped.

throughout the years, anytime i needed a helpful ear to help sort out stressors in my life or help me work on coming to accept certain things about myself that i wasn't willing to accept (losing a gf because i was too controlling or manipulative) or something, i went to a therapist.

they're really helpful in kneading out the lumps in your personality if you want those lumps gone.

Therapy is for uncovering your problems. If you already know what you have to face about yourself, and what to do in life to overcome, then a therapist is wasted cash. If you are looking for a complete stranger to talk to, there are cheaper options (make a new friend).

How does the thought of going to a therapist make you feel?

scared, actually.

/serious response

Well two things can happen.

1. You get locked into a constant cycle of therapy sessions where you begin to depend on your therapist's approval to validate your life.

2. The therapist will offer some insight into your life that allow you to start making different choices and resolve whatever problem cause you to seek help.

You're better off chumming it up with a good friend over a beer. If you have no good friends, then go find a therapist you can trust. Don't be afraid to change if the first one is no good.

Only for a couple visits upon my father's request after I came out.

He didn't want them to turn me straight, just to make sure I had someone to talk if I was having any issues. She apparently decided I was mostly sane and turned me loose.

Been to various therapists for my own issues. I did not find them helpful (except that one of them gave me a prozac prescription, which was very helpful - but it was the drugs, not the talking, that was helpful).

Been to a couple family therapists. Having an unbiased third party to help communication has been very helpful.

So did you end up going back?

Almost after learning I was expected to enjoy show tunes.

Common misconception is that seeing a therapist will give you some new found wisdom and change your life. Therapist are sounding boards and offer advice on how they think you could improve your life, they cannot change it for you, it is up to you to do the work.
