I just got this SM1612 unit. Man, this thing sounds like a 737 taking off everytime it starts spinning up! Is it just this particular unit I got isn't quiet enough? :frown:
lordex, I've got a Tosh 1212 and it's not quiet when it first starts spinning up. While it's a bit loud at startup, it's a solid drive. Hope this helps.
What I noticed with my new toshiba 16x DVD is that when playing a DVD movie
it initially spins up fast and loud. It then gradually lowers its speed and quiets down while the movie is playing. If I call up the menu while the movie is playing it spins back up loud again. At least it goes quiet if I don't f with it during playback.
I always thought it would be great if on fast cd or DVD players you could manually set a lower and quiet speed when you want it. I only want warp speed when installing or copying stuff.

Hmmm... this seems to be similar to my experience. So is it always loud when you are copying (e.g. installing some large software)? In my case, during the entire copying I can constantly feel my desk vibrating (the machine sits on the desk).
I have sent Gateway a RMA request but haven't heard from them. Their CS sucks!
I have the Toshiba 16x DVDROM and it really isnt even that loud when it spins up, its far quieter than my AOpen 12/10/32x when I use it to rip CDs. Frankly, the only annoying thing about the Toshiba is its damn 8x DAE limit!
