Anybody else seeing street legal Can Am Commanders?

Squisher

Lifer
I keep seeing one running around town with a license plate, full windshield, wipers, turn signals, and a roof that wraps around the back. Is someone making these now? How exactly do you get insurance on something like this?

It probably falls somewhere under farm equipment. Not sure if Kansas law still allows four wheelers in the road, but they used to as long as it was licensed as farm equipment (and had tags).

FWIW, the town (small town) I grew up in allows 4-wheels / side-by-sides on all roads except one major highway. Every other road though allows them... I believe the only requirement is that it is registered. Its annoying as shit because they don't feel normal driving laws apply to them.

You can run quads on the road here in AZ..nothing new here 😛

and fairly common, especially in the older areas. street legal golf carts are a regular thing here, and the polaris/ rhino types are quickly becoming their replacement.

Since you live on the east side of MI ill give you a pass here.. Its no different than registering a dune buggy... And i see plenty of them on the street here, along with RZRs. You can register anything in the state of MI with..

Headlight with hi/low
Turn signals
Wiper
Windshield
Break light/tail light
Plate light
Seatbelts

Call the cops
they come out, check of a list of the above items, sigh a form.
Get insurance, goto SOS, WIN..

ATVs don't have seat belts, so I'm not sure we will ever see them road legal in PA. I actually rode mine on the road in Potter County last weekend, but the ATV legal roads are few and far between UNLESS it's around Potter County.

Actually, lack of turn signals is a bigger issue than lack of seat belts from what I've heard.

Ehh, no. There is a reason an ATV doesn't have a seat belt - same as a motorcycle. When you need to bail, you NEED to BAIL. I'd be dead if I was wearing a seat belt when I ride.

I took a tumble off of this hill in July if '11:

This was what was left of my ride at the bottom of that hill. It probably flipped 12 times on the way down. I was knocked out for maybe 12-20 seconds and suffered only a broken rib.

If I had been belted in, I would not be alive.

Yeah on an ATV I wouldn't want a belt for that reason. But for something that does have a structure to it like in the OP a belt would be OK as you have a roll cage type structure to prevent crushing.

So, that structure around the passenger compartment on these vehicles is there strictly to add weight then? 😕

No way would I want to be attached to the vehicles you posted pics of but I seriously question your opinion on the vehicle the OP posted. Oh, and FTR I have been riding motorcycles (street bikes) for years.

the ones like in the OP usually have 4 point seat belts in them. usually fairly beefy ones too. i can get some pics of them if you like, theres a shop that repairs them next to my friends custom shop. we sometimes take them out in the parking lot for joyrides.

Jules, you're reading too much into my statement. I said an ATV doesn't need a seat belt. The pic OP posted is an SxS (side by side) which has a roll cage and 4 point harness. I don't consider them the same type of vehicle.

And yes, we are all aware of your riding prowess. But I seriously doubt you even lift, bro. 😉
