I googled & found the AVG forum and noticed a couple folks having update probs there too, so I tried everything they said........

uninstall (tick remove "user settings")
reinstall
reboot modem/router
reboot pc

Nothing works! I pulled up the screen to update definitions, then the "Opening Connection/Receiving" text blinks really fast, then it closes & it's done. I *KNOW* there's a new def set 'cuz my defs are now 9 days old.

????? 😕

UPDATE ----------> Go into your hosts file (in XP it's in Windows/System32/Drivers/Etc) and eliminate ***ANY*** mention of the word "GRISOFT".

To do this, you will simply edit the text. (When Windows asks what program you want to open "hosts" with, select Wordpad.) Then simply backspace the line w/ "grisoft" in it out of existence. Then click 'save' and exit Wordpad. You are now good to go!!!!!!!!! I promise!!!!

I noticed there are several mentions of this over on the AVG forum and apparently AVG is powerless to fix it. They already lost one of my machines to Avast. (Don't know if I'll change back or just keep Avast yet). This kind of simple stuff just pisses me off. For me, it was on 2 different computers (IBM Thinkpad and Dell Inspiron) so I know it's not limited to any brand/style. It sounds like it's a WindowsXP thing.

Hope this helps a lot of folks!

OK, well AVG seems to be fine, but the program's definitely not updating on my laptop.

I deleted the updates file history in the 'advanced' tab under update.

I searched for 'WAIT4SD' file, but my googling turned this up from an '06 search, so I think that file is probably not valid anymore.

I finally gave up & manually updated. (21mb file) Anyway, it's updated now, but I can tell that it's not going to update via the internet properly anymore. It's still doing the same thing where it flickers the message "receiving" and then it just closes the dialogue window.

😕

Mine updates, but it keeps saying its out of date, then when I go to update it says I'm already up to date. This has happened on every single machine that I've set it up on. So theres something screwy with their updater. What I do is just choose to ignore plugin status so it stops going gray as its a false alarm.

P.S. Anyone wanna bet the paid version doesn't have this problem and/or FIXES the problem.......mysteriously??? (Mother f!@#$!@#%)

I have 4 computers with AVG - 2 laptops and 2 desktops. They all occasionally have a problem with updates, and it is usually because AVG tries to do that BEFORE the system is fully stable after loading Windows and all background stuff.

I find the best solution is to simply hit CANCEL as soon as that window pops up. Then after everything is loaded and stable, right click on the AVG icon in the notification area (formerly system tray) and select UPDATE. It then has an unobstructed use of your internet connection w/o interference from other programs, and the updates come in nicely.

IOW, at boot and load, AVG gets a little bit antsy and thinks it's the only game in town. Patience works.
