Anybody else hate car games now?

They used to be my favorite genre of video game, easily. NFS and NFS2 on the PC were incredible. So was Gran Turismo 3. However, now when I play one I'm bored inside of 5 minutes, 10 at the most. I played Forza 4 and not even sure I got around the track once. I literally spent more time downloading it and loading it than playing.

I think the problem for me is that these games seem not to have gotten better over the years except graphically, or perhaps I don't have the same love affair with cars I used to (driven many more real miles since). Same ole going around tracks, building up cars, no personalities or story lines.

I kind of agree. The last car game I had fun with was Burnout Paradise. Before and after that were several years of crap.
Sim games are never going to have a "story" though, we'll probably be stuck bolting parts to fancier and fancier cars and racing around in virtual time trials modes for a long time yet.

I still love them. With Forza 4 just coming out, I will put some music on and just race for a few hours when I have nobody else on XBL.

What pisses me off is that I can't unlock all the cars when playing online with friends. I don't want to spending 100 hrs unlocking freakin' cars. I just want to race my friends online with something other than a Ford Focus!!! 😡

I think driving games are one of the best genres of gaming, actually. You get speed and physics and reaction time. Better than the typical FPS, actually.

Stopped playing all kind of car games after release of Need for speed Carbon. After that title (but I enjoyed it) I nevermore played any car game. The only game where i enjoyed driving car again were GTA.

I'm in the same boat. I tried the demo for Forza 4 and just felt bored before completely two laps. For me it peaked around GT3 and since then I just can't recapture the same feeling. The games and upgrades also feel very formulaic and haven't really evolved into anything new. Like most sports game, the actual meat of the game doesn't allow much improvement and is very simplistic.

maybe you need the G27 wheel and wheelstandpro to make it epic. GT5 feels truely amazing with it especially.

gt5 i still love. i also had a lot of fun with Shift. but part 2, i havnt got into it yet. i'll give it another go sometime i'm in the mood.

I miss NFS 3. The run looks good graphically but got poor reviews. if it requires Origin i'm definitly out or i'll just rent it on ps3 or something.

I hope you don't mean any of the mainstream racing games when talking about physics. Physics are horrendous on most mainstream games.

I always thought NFS: Porsche Unleashed was really fun, I also liked NFS: Most Wanted. After that I just havn't really gotten into racing game like I did those two.

Nope, TDU is still there, untarnished, with a buttload of fun cars.
Of course, I am now bored by every race and sightseeing is no longer exciting, but nothing about the game is BAD, its just a little old.
When a worthy successor comes out, I'll play that.

I've always had more fun with the non-uber-realistic racing games like Burnout and that one game I can't remember the name of on the Dreamcast that was so much fun...

Ridge Racer on the PS1 was a favorite of mine. I could drift perfectly around every turn on every course but ever since then I just can't get into them.

The last racing game I enjoyed was Most Wanted. Not a game played for physics, but for smashing through many police barricades.

i love racing games still, but not the sim ones.

i'm actually playing need for speed: the run right now and it's a lot of fun. it is more of the same though from the NFS series, but it's still good fun. played NFS:HP when it was out as well and enjoyed it a lot.

really wish another burnout was in the works. burnout paradise is probably the best racing game this gen, if not all time.

This is when they need a new Carmageddon if anyone remembers that. It's prime for twisted metal to release too...taking entirely too long for that one. It's a car game, but different.

I still love playing GT5, but I simply don't have the time and the correct setup to play the game as it was intended. I bought the Force GT wheel, but I don't want to drop another hundred to get a stand for it. Yes, fail move on my part.

I've always hated car games but what I really hate are when games include some car driving element. I don't want to drive cars so please don't force it. I'm currently playing through L.A. Noire and like how they allow you to skip an action scene after a few attempts if you want.

I went off them. Unlocking and grinding in GT5 just got too tedious. Was fun with the wheel but that was always a pain to drag out.
