Anybody else get really sad when they think of humane societies?

I know that they are ultimately a great organization but it's really sad to think of the animals that are stuck in a little cage for months or years awaiting adoption. Our local shelter is rather large and has a no-kill policy, but it's really sad to look at the adoption page and see all of the neat animals with nobody to care for them....some have been there for almost a year.... Ugh.

I think I might donate some money or food sometime as there's not much else a person could do. We're considering adopting an adult cat that we rescued that was SUPER nice but already have two (our apartment's limit) so we'd be breaking our lease just to help out.

Anybody else think it is sad?

Local cat page, lots of pics, beware!

Yes, it's very sad. What's more sad are all the fscking irresponsible pet owners that buy something they saw in a movie, discover they actually make lousy pets for the most part and take them to the pound. If people would do a little research before buying an animal and neuter or spay the goddamn thing once they buy it we'd have far fewer animals in shelters. :|

Yep, when I see or think about stuff like that, it makes me want to go home and beat my cats. 😉 Those little guys have it so good, compared to the stray cats I see in our complex on occasion. ::sigh:: At least there's a few kitties in this world that have a good home.

It's kind of a sore point for me as I was a vet tech for a few years and exposed to a multitude of stupid people who opted to buy pets.

I agree. It does really suck. It's just not the first thing I think about when I want to think about something depressing.

No doubt - We have 2 pussies - one himalayan and one black regular cat. Recently we found that one outside that was by far the nicest cat I have ever seen and we took it in overnight to bring to the humane society the next day. The other night at our new apartment I saw another stray outside, a grey kitten, and eventually got it to come by me and it too was extremely nice.

The pussies we actually own only come by for attention when they're hungry and spend the rest of their time by themselves sleeping. It's weird, and sad that strays are nicer than our regular ones, heh.

It's not the first thing I think about either, but we're considering adopting the cat we found and turned in and it's ..... I don't know - it's hard to explain. It's just that many of those animals want love and attention more than anything and instead they're stuck inside a cold metal cage by themselves or with one other cat or dog.

hmm I think currently humane society is the only charitable organization I give money too. Not much but sometimes.Great thing about being a "member" is, in addition to helping some animals, damn they give some sweet gifts too! I've gotten picture books, an american flag, post cards, return address stickies, etc. Oh yeah and a pimp ass mug and shirts!

Yes it is. Too many breeders and too many people who don't take proper care of their animals.

Getting a dog at least is like talking care of an infant in many ways. Not something to take lightly.

This guy in university bought one 3rd year and three years later gave it up to somebody. He never got it neutered. He never took it for walks once the novelty wore off. Freaking dog started licking its own dick because it was hard half the time and once this jackoff realized that "hey having a dog can be a pain in the ass!" he decided to get rid of it.

Then don't get me started! Well I'll start: Some friends of ours have a fvcking dog. The dog is ok but they go on trips frequently and expect people to come and feed it. I drove to their house 6 times recently (8 miles each way). And then when they got back "thanks". No case of beer or anything. So we won't be taking care of their dog again. Plus they wouldn't feed our cats when we went some weekend (they were "too busy").

If you can't afford a goddamned kennel for your dog either a) Don't buy the goddamn dog. b) Don't go on goddamn trips. c) Give me fvcking beer when I take care of the thing.

Oh I failed to mention this dog gets fed twice a day (two scoops morning/one evening). Guess who wasn't bloodywell driving to their house twice a day? That dog got 3 scoops in the morning by God.

Yep that pretty much sums it up. Acceptance that you can't save them all is very hard. 🙁 We currently have 10 cats and 2 dogs and all of them are either rescues or from a shelter.
