Anybody developing iPhone apps?

I downloaded the SDK and it is really quite good. I'm going to fiddle with some easy things like a unit converter program like the widget on dashboard.

I want to. I even have a pretty darn good idea for an app. I just only have a G4, so I have no compatible Mac to develop on.

Sucks.

I want to buy a new Macbook Pro, and even have the money for it, but a). they're going to be [likely mildly] refreshed in the next six weeks and b). they're going to be majorly refreshed with Nehalem. That's the one I want, I think.

So I just need someone or something to provide me with an Intel Mac for 6 months!

Yeah, I have a handful of ideas, but they're mainly little freebie apps. Long live Installer.app 😛

I would love to... but I don't have an iPhone. AT&T's rates are astronomically expensive. I don't think I'll ever be able to afford one, actually.

You don't need an iphone to write apps, the SDK comes with an iphone simulator that works just as well as the real thing.

Write a good app and your customers could pay for your iPhone.

I've started learning it a few days ago. I'll let you know how my experience is. I dont think it is as easy as they say.

I would really like to, I have a wicked idea for a desktop/iphone based Monopoly companion (yes, my friends and I are such nerds that the regular rules of Monopoly no longer sated us, and neither did tracking on paper, we have moved to a spreadsheet based solution, and hopefully, a full automated solution) that would basically make the iphone your dice/money supply/deal maker (if you have other friends with iPhones at the game)/way to quickly calculate your personal worth/who you owe money to and how much when you land on a space, or someone lands on yours.

Frankly I think it would be wicked, but my friend and I need to get the desktop client up and running and then beyond the command line before I can really think about this. Though I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to learn ObjectiveC if I actually sit down and work on it... but then again, I had trouble learning the syntax of C++...

Yep... I have a few ideas that I am working on. One app is about 80% of the way there. Objective-C is definitely a switch from Java/Perl/PHP

who do you have now? Take out the data plan, and I think I might actually save $10-$15/month AND get rollover minute vs Verizon. But then, most of my calls now are Verizon so I barely touch my minutes.

As for developing... I would like to, but have no ideas.. haha.. and haven't touched code in a while.

I have Sprint... I pay $50 a month, including data, for 1000 minutes and a bunch of other perks. AT&T's comparable plan is $90 for 900 minutes and data. I'm out of contract; I could switch at any time... but my school related expenses are getting even higher every month, practically. Factor in the price of gas (and as as a result, the price of food!) and I just can't do it. I'm sure I could sacrifice SOMETHING to get the iPhone, but that just sounds like a stupid move. I'd rather eat healthy and have a shitty Sprint phone than to eat fast food all the time and get fat, but have an iPhone.

... and what's the point of an iPhone without a data plan? 😉

I guess I'll take a look at the iPhone SDK with the simulator... but I just don't have the motivation to develop for a platform I don't even have, ya know? My summer classes end in 5 weeks. Currently I'm doing C, C++, Java, and ASM all at the same time, so my brain is pretty much FRIED with all the different programming languages. I'll take a look at Objective C when I'm done with finals. LOL!

edit: GRRR I just remembered that I need OS X installed... Fine then, I'll scrape up some cash, buy another hard drive, and set up a hackintosh. 😛
