Anybody buy the house right next door to their parents?

I haven't thought this totally out but one opened up. It next door to my mom's place.

Pros: Saves Money

I get a good wifi signal
I could use her trash service
Maybe a bunch of other stuff too
In the future should I have kids I've got help nearby

Cons: It's next door LOL

I don't think it's some thing that you can just write pros/cons too and you'd have to live it to understand it. We get along ok but we butt heads sometimes as she's very stubborn. It's in socal (very expensive) so I think she'd help with the down payment. i.e. she'd have some say in it.

My parents share a driveway with my grandparents. My wife's parents shared a driveway her grandparents growing up. I live about 1500 feet from my parents right now.

None of us share(d) garbage/wifi/cable/ect. All of us get along very well and appreciate the backing knowing that somebody is around to watch over your place, let the dog out for a bathroom break if needed, or pick up a package off the porch if you won't be around for a while to receive it.

My Mom lives in Florida...my Dad in upstate NY.

I couldn't possibly live farther away from them and remain on this continent.

I would consider it. But I'm older, have already owned a house on my own, established my own independence, what have you. My parents are in their 70s and need more and more help from me, so having them close would make that easier. I would not have lived next door to them when I was younger.

If the house next door to my parents was a palace that came on the market for $1 I wouldn't buy it if I had to live there.

That would be cute. Use your parents money to buy the house right next door!

I love my parents, but I'd rather kill myself. Both for accepting their money and living that close.

I'd probably shoot myself if I had to deal with 20 questions from my mom about every guy who came over or getting harassed by my dad for not raking the lawn or cutting the grass every day 😛

I think you are confusing saving money and being a mooch.

would it be illegal in your town to booby trap the grounds between you and your parents homes with barbed wire, claymore mines and bouncing betties? That might work then...

Are you married? in a relationship? It could be awkward later. Your SO might be put off by living next to your parents and then it would be awkward to tell them that you're moving because of her.

I live about 300 or so miles from my parents- works great- close enough for occasional weekend visits/drop off the dog for dog-sitting if needed but far enough away they're not in my day to day life.

Don't think I'd even like living in the same city as them honestly (and nothing against my parents- we have a great relationship)

*edit*
Have you lived alone for a while now? Or have you always lived w/ your parents?

Edit: Must add that having kids certainly makes it a much nicer option.

Sometimes on the weekend I'll take my daughter over to my parents a little before lunch and Mom will get her fed and then tuck her in for a nap for a few hours. That way I can get some work done around the house uninterrupted or worrying about waking her up if I'm using a power tool or hammering something together. It's an excellent 3 hours of sanity saving and not that much of a burden on the grandparents. They actually ask us to do that frequently.

I dunno about next door, but I certainly wouldn't mind living closer to my folks (or my wife's folks). It's incredibly convenient if you need a favor (letting the dog out, as someone mentioned), but I also find certain comfort knowing I'm close to family.

As it is, we're 200 miles from my wife's parents and 1000 from mine.

Not sure. I don't think i'd be able to afford it right now since they live in a pretty affluent neighborhood. My sister and her husband live about 15 minutes away from my parents. My wife and I are about a 3 hour drive. I wouldn't mind living close to them, but not sure about next door.

I've actually really started bonding more with my family over the last 5 years or so, and that might be because I am further away from them. I always got along with them, but over the last couple years my dad and I have really bonded more.

I don't like where my mom lives or where my dad lives. Now, if my mom bought the house next door to mine, I wouldn't mind that at all, and I could help her save a bit of $$$ since she could use my wifi and garbage service, but, my mom can't afford it... My dad makes well over 100K so he could easily afford it, except that he's got 2 rental properties that he's losing money on and is a compulsive gambler... and, then he would always try to borrow my shit if he lived next door (and not return stuff!)

My parents and in-laws live both live about 15 minutes away. Too far to just walk over or drop by without verifying we are home, but close enough to provide fantastic baby-sitting services.

A friend of mine bought a house across from his parents. He loved it but his wife couldn't handle that her mother-in-law was constantly coming over. They eventually divorced.

My mother and her husband moved to his mother's place (10 miles away) when she passed in 2002. I bought the old house from them. No regrets.
