Any X-Wing type games around anymore?

I miss this genre of space combat games and had a ball playing all the Lucas Arts releases. Not looking for strategy/combat mix, just fly & shoot. Does anyone make these now? TIA.

Nope, sorry. Most recent one was Freespace 2, over a decade ago.

You could also try the Rogue Squadron games for GameCube, which aren't nearly as deep but have a somewhat similar feel. Too bad they're not even making those anymore either.

EDIT: Star Wars Battlefront 2 sort of has this as well in the space battles. Again, pretty simplified like Rogue Squadron, but it's something.

That game should not be mentioned.

Why ever would you say that? There's NO other current space sim/shooter that holes a candle to it at this time. As far as the core mechanics of it goes, it's a fine if not (pardon the pun) stellar game.

Yeah, it's no X-Wing or even Wing Commander (which imho was far superior in nearly every way to X-Wing), but it's available and it's good.

Op wants to jump in, fly and point guns at bad guys. Black Prophecy EXCELS at that.

Sigh. All this makes me want to build a 90's-era system just for the games I have sitting around I can no longer play (X-Wing, Mech 3, Star Wars Racer, etc.) and really miss. I am soooo bored with all the FPS titles, and was never into role playing. Portal 2 is about the most fun I've had in a game in some time.

Nobody mentions Starlancer? For shame...
LOL! That review is only 11 years old. I'm amazed it's still up. I am glad that at least Hawx2 is available when I want to fly a jet fighter around and blow shit up. Now, if I could only do it in space...

If you're looking for space shooters, around 10 years old is going to be about the newest you're going to find.

X-Wing Alliance is 3D accelerated and works in XP. I dunno about Vista.

Freelancer really isnt the same thing, but it works better on modern OS's and has a huge mod community.

Just about every game I've enjoyed from that era stopped working in Windows after XP, or at least I could never get them to run. Spent a week trying to get Mech 4 to run under Win7 and finally gave up. Compatibility mode seems not to work on these games. I was hoping that XP Mode in Win7 would let us run legacy games, but I couldn't get it to recognize any input devices except mouse and k/b. I hate being thwarted!

There have been some space flight sim type shooters in recent years. Whether they were good or not, i dunno.

I can't think of what they are called now though.

SOL: Exodus is supposed to be out this fall, but it's anyone's guess when that actually will be.

Vengeance or Mercs? If the latter, go grab the free rerelease from Mektek.net. It works fine on Win7 x64 out of the box, and has a ton of extra content (~100 new mechs and a ton of newer weapon systems).

Freelancer is probably the most recent simple space shooter, and that's from 2003. And even still it's not mission based, and the fact that it's mouse driven probably makes it too simple for you in some respects, from a sim standpoint.

The X space games are the most recent notable space sims but there's much more fleet management aspects to those. Dark Horizon is probably the most recent and closest thing you're looking for but I don't think it was very well received.
