Er, I was looking at the help wanted section of the Chicago Sun-Times and saw
DATA ENTRY:Earn $15/Hr. & Up. Medical Billing.
Training Provided. PC Req'd. Call 7 Days:
So when I called up, I got this lady that sounded annoyed.. said i'd work as an indepentant contractor, and they fax/mail forms to me and I use their software and a 1800 modem call to send it back. It sounded good, she said it paid $1.50 to $3 a bill, but then mentioned it was $500 for the software, training, certification, and support.

First thought was scam, but I wanted to ask if anyone has done similar for cheaper.. I found a link for medical billing scams, but they say you are buying only software and a list, not what this lady was saying. Any thoughts?

Any job like that where they ask for money from you to work for them is a scam.

I got scammed on something like that... (search for other "work at home" threads, BTW) ...

I spoke with some guy on the phone who wanted money up front to pay for the "software"... never got it... and months of phone calls led to nothing.

The reason I went for it in the first place was because I did many data entry jobs and felt this was a new way of doing it while in college... this was back in 1997.

I did a ton of research on these things. Most of them are scams.

The most glaring, obvious problem is that the act of medical billing itself, if not done from the caregiver's location, is in violation of privacy laws (HIPAA).

Oh, that's not to mention THEY MAKE YOU PAY FOR THE SOFTWARE.

Haven't people learned that jobs that make you PAY TO WORK are SCAMS?
