Just by the way, it's looking like the R600 *is* a midrange card, based on both the leaked benchmarks and the preliminary pricing. It can't beat the 8800GTX. I'll bet the -LE R600 cards will be under $300 within a few months.

I wouldn't touch a 128-bit card.

Well my budget is at $250. I am going to be buying my bro and sis cards so at $250 each that is $500. If it was just one card I'd have bought a 8800 GT 320.

So yea either a 8600GTS or something from ATi.

Also I thought all these ATi cards were launching together. Didn't they say that they delayed the R600 so they could launch the whole range together? And that the drivers have been ready for a long time? I guess it was all bullshit.

X1950Pro ($150) and X1950XT ($170) are the best mid-range cards money can buy, period (and 7950GT if you can find it at a discount).

There is almost no chance that a mid-range ATI card of R600 variety will outpeform X1950XT. At the same time, the video acceleration of 8600GTS cards is a good feature but it's a moot point since X1950Pro/X1950XT combo will easily handle any HD video without dropping frames anyway with anything faster than E6300 Core 2.

Unfortunately they only ship to the US of A. :(

Plus that $270 doesn't include shipping and taxes that would bring it to near $300.

Also while the X1950s are cheap and good, they don't have the ability to play DX10.

You think 8600GTS will play DX10 games in their glory when it cant even beat X1950Pro in DX9?

Recall that Geforce 6 had support for PS3.0 and by the time games came out that could take advantage of HDR, it couldn't cope. Sure 9800Pro had support for DX9.0 which was superior to 5900 series but at the end of the day by the time extensive DX9.0 games arrived like FEAR, it was struggling as well. It has also been said that DX10 is much about performance and little about image quality at least for the first generation of games. Considering X1950XT often outperforms 8800GTS 320mb, having DX10 "feature" isn't worthwhile to sacrifice which is sometimes a 2x performance decrease in today's games. You betting that 8600GTS will suddenly increase in performance substantially with DX10 games (the magnitude of which neither of us can estimate). But I can tell you that for the next 6 months, X1950XT will be faster by at least 50%.

The general consensus is that it usually takes a 2nd generation card to play a DX API. So DX9.0 9800Pro was best for DX8.1 games, X800 series was best for DX9.0 games and Geforce 9 should be best for DX10 games.
