Any word on Folding@Home for PS4?

The people working on the folding project considered the PS3 a "game changer" when the Folding@home application was released for the system, and for several years the computational power of PS3 users accounted for the large majority of folding done. So with the significant power boost offered by the PS4, will they will be doing the same thing again?

The combined CPU + GPU power of the PS4 dwarfs what the PS3 was capable of, and such an app could easily break the record for distributing computing power if it was released. So is there any news when it comes to this? If not, I hope if anyone here who is in touch with the guys at Sony will encourage them to do a PS4 folding app. The results would be amazing.

Maybe; it will suck.

When the PS3 was released, the only other client available was the uniprocessor client, which would net 100-400PPD depending on the CPU. On the other hand, the PS3 got a reliable 700PPD, because the Cell processor was a much, much better processor than desktop CPUs of the day.

Now, the PS4 is basically a dual-Trinity system with a weak-ass AMD GPU. Relatively weak compared to high-end NVidia GPUs and quad-G34 systems.

An 8 core CPU and a GPU that does 1.84+ TFLOPS is nothing to sniff at. Multiply it by a few million users and I think it is definitely worth the effort for the F@H team to get it done.

It won't be a game changer and it won't suck. What's with the extreme talk?

The app should come with relative ease since the PS4 should be able to run existing PC applications for FAH and BOINC. The harder part will be getting console gamers to do DC. Have you ever seen how hard it is to talk a PC gamer into using his rig for DC? It'll probably be people who already DC that happen to own consoles as well but honestly, the money would be better spent on computer parts if this is only for DC and not for gaming.

the main thing that'll make it worth it is if sony were to basically embrace the thought and set it to properly run in the background and a really low priority level. The added heat and usage will just end up making the death rate of these machines skyrocket.

From my xbox repair days you'd be shocked how many numbskulls are in 100+ degree trailers trying to game all day and wondering why the machine keeps breaking
