None announced or mentioned anywhere, so likely not before next year.

Parts for making drives are in shorter supply than expected, so also no big price drops any time soon.

I might be mistaken, but I think DVDRW is currently at 2x (or 2.4x for +). The 4x is for DVDR. Like I said, I could be mistaken. Been a while since I last looked.

My Pioneer DVRA05 is DVD-R 4x, DVD-RW 2x, CD-RW 8x, CD-R, 24x, CD-ROM 32x.

Didn't see any faster than that. (and for under $300) This drives a good deal, i'm yet to do a lot of burning yet.

Yeah, I don't expect to be seeing any faster ones this year, maybe towards the last month or two if the drive market changes a good amount, but probably no.

IIRC, Ricoh or NEC have a 8x +R in alpha state right now and that is supposed to be paper launched after Thanksgiving this year. So it should show its mug by Feburary earliest.

I hope it comes out soon, cause when it does, the prices on slower drives may actually become reasonable.

I ask because I remember when CD-R drives were coming up and the speeds didn't get respectable until 8x... I think when copying DVDs' 8x will be significantly faster.

Most of the companies are looking into BluRay technology for the most part. I wouldn't hold my breath too long on the speed up of variables. More than likely an advanced method of burning CLV, etc etc. is more optmistic approach.

Have one of these also. I wont complain about speed. 15 minutes for a full 4.+g is plenty fast for me! I don't even use it for cd burning. I just use my trusty old lite-on in another machine.
