allow me to begin.

2003 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir. Napa Valley. 25 bucks from Cost Plus.

great stuff imo. I used to be a cab-only person, but ever since this bottle I have converted to the Pinot camp! :)

Dom Perignon 1996 vintage or earlier. Not the cheapest at $200 a bottle but you live once so what the hell!

not a champaign person myself, and I definitely don't have the acquired taste for liquid that carries a triple digit price tag :) [perhaps an Opus One :) ]

This is from the Burrowing Owl Winery, in the Okanagan Valley in B.C. where I grew up...It is one fantastic wine!!

2002 Meritage
Darkest red colour. A classic full flavoured Bordeaux style wine that features rich berry fruit and elegant development. The bouquet ornaments mouthfilling berry fruit with chocolate and coffee complexities and it is followed by generous outgoing berry fruit flavours knit with fully integrated oak, all framed by the smoothest of tannins. The finesse of this wine has brought together the best of its noble vinifera constituents. Winner of Best of Class in both the Pacific Rim and L.A. County Fair wine competitions.

Who cares about the vintage? Dom is pretty damn good regardless. Older does not always equal better, and I know for a fact that several years after '96 have been tremendous in France (countrywide, not simply Champagne).

Here's a fairly common one: Anapamu Central Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. I don't see the Chardonnay much, but the Pinot is quite common and usually runs around $12-15. Both are very tasty and among my staples.

I'm mostly partial to French, particularly Bourgogne and Rhone wines. I've recently discovered Alsatian whites though -- fantastic.

I have been enjoying many local wines from our wonderful NY State wineries here in the Finger lakes area of NY!

If you are anywhere within a few hours drive of the area, I recommend a wine tour of the CAYUGA or SENECA wine trails

They often have special events, like the Holiday Shopping Spree that my wife and I are going to take part in on December 3!

Some of my favorites:

Kat Knapp, Pasta red, Prism - KNAPP Winery

Red Cat, Cabin fever - Hazlitt 1852 vineyards

Viking Red or White, Svenska Red - Swedish Hill Winery

and SEVERAL unique fruit and honey wines from
Montezuma Winery

Uncork, enjoy, and empty the bottle! ;)

For cheap ($10 - $12) available at most Grocery Stores, Bogle makes some great wine (including the only Chardonnay I've ever enjoyed). Their house flavor is smooth, even in the Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

For champagne, I'll take Nicolaus Feillaut (sp?) any day over Dom (Dom = Bose of wine industry IMO, I do not care for it at all - neither do any of my wine-drinking friends).

Again in the "smooth" category, the $18 (when I had it, no idea on the cost or availability now) Bargetto Merlot is fantastic.

Also, try a decent Zinfandel (Red, not "white"), probably going to need to spend at least $18 to get a drinkable bottle. California's greatest addition to enology...

It's a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot mix. I would'nt necessarily recommend it for a beginner who's just starting to drink red wine. It's delicious, but very rich...and takes a little working up to get used to it! :)
