well?...i was just curious as to what it's like...well???...whats it like? LOL!
i've read about it somewhat, but i really would like to hear what someone using it has to say about it 😀

thanks muchly.

hi,
boozy43. It sure is Mind Boggling! The beta Latest 2257 is good .
It is to tell you a next generation OS.
It is actually a combination of Neptune and Odyssey into one
product. In other words, Whistler is the next generation of Windows,
called Windows.NET 1.0 , and it will be based on Windows 2000,
not the old Windows 9x kernel. Whistler will ship in the same
editions as Windows 2000--that is, Professional, Server,
Advanced Server, and DataCenter Server--as well as a Personal
Edition for consumers that will replace Windows Me.
Whistler Personal is designed as an upgrade for Windows 9x/Me and
will therefore ship with the same type of consumer features found
in Windows Me. But the biggest difference is processor support:
Whistler Personal will support only one processor, while
Professional supports two. And Whistler Personal doesn't support
the Remote Desktop (Terminal Services) feature that's found in
Professional. Other than that, they are very similar. I expect
Microsoft to ship Personal with a default "consumer" Visual Style
while Professional will probably use the "Professional" Visual
Style by default (these can be changed, of course).
Whistler has new GUI interface which is designed in XML.It has a
skinnable User Interface.
Microsoft is almost taking it to a Mac Style its too cool all the
user Interface i mean....
It also has a new start panel whichh has all the basic things and
the misc in other group.
Remember ,U will also be able to play games in it as Microsoft i think is trying to make it as both a Consumer & Entreprise Solution
Anything else u want to know please write up clearly ....

well thanks alot easternerd 😀

that was some pretty comprehensive feedback!
thanks for taking the time to tell us all a little about whistler 🙂
i'm dual booting win2kpro and win98...i love win2k...its great!
but alot "heavier" than win98 [i do however have win98 installed with 98LitePro and tweaked right to the max]...so its pretty "light"...but win2k is super-duper stable!!

i'm looking forward to whistler 🙂

wow an MS OS that sounds cool. I heard its suppose to come out in a year or so? isn't that a little fast for new OSes? i have to redo my w2k certs. 🙁

it would be fast for Microsoft to put out another operating system if we really count WinMe. For the most part WinMe is Win(*se with the new patches/fixes, + WMP7, + the Movie Maker, +the rollback feature, - DOS. They had to realese this to keep us in the "i have to upgrade my OS" mindset. this way when they release wistler we will flock like sheep to buy that one too. granted WinMe is a bit faster/stable then Win98se and wistler will be a LOT better then anything thus far. all in all it is a way of keeping us in the must upgrade boat-

It'll be out in less than a year. I'm sure drivers wont be a problem, there is already Voodoo5 Drivers 🙂. Whistler will be a damn cool OS (Already is), can't wait for Beta 1. I would suggest any thinking of WinME should save their pennies for Whistler.

My 2 Cents

Anybody have any screen shots of this "cool new os" with the "cool gui". I would be very interested in seeing what they've done.

Also, how do you become a Microsoft beta tester for new operating systems and stuff without working at microsoft?

The only way that I know of that you can get on a beta test list from Microsoft is if you signup for their TechNet program. Currently i think you need to be Microsoft Certified to Do this. I could be wrong, but as far as i have heard Microsoft is not letting just anyone beta test thier software anymore. Although if anyone knows differently i would love to hear about it.

Usenet news:
alt.binaries.warez.nt
2257 was posted by "someone" about 2 weeks ago.

anyone know if DUAL PROCESSOR support in whistler will be better than what is currently inside Windows2000 or will it basically be the same thing?

OS X utilizes dual processors at the kernal level from what I hear...

Usenet news? Your ISP can provide the address. Only "pay" ISP's have it, or else get a separate paid news provider like supernews.com. Use Agent or FreeAgent as newsreader, which can be obtained from www.tucows.com. Outlook Express will also work. To uncompress the posted file segments, use WinRar.

"Critics have long lambasted the company for maintaining two separate 32-bit operating system lines (Windows 9x and Windows NT/2000). Whistler will silence these and many other critics."
-- Paul Thurrott

Does this quote mean that all programs designed around the 9x kernal will work in Whistler? I mean, if they arent compatible, there are going to be MANY people who upgrade and will have problems.

I don't think Technet Plus subscribers are gonna get Whistler. I'm a MCSE and I haven't got a copy yet. I'll see if I get a beta when October's CD's get here in a week.
