Any way to verify that scratches on a PlayStation disc will not affect the game?

Bought Final Fantasy VII on eBay. Discs 2 and 3 look pretty good, but Disc 1 has some light scratches. It should be fine, but I'd rather know for sure that they won't cause a problem before I leave positive feedback. I'd rather not make the seller wait until I play through the first disc to receive positive feedback.

Is there any way I can run some kind of disc check to make sure it'll work?

You could try backing it up and see if it's read okay. That's not 100% perfect but it's better than nothing. I've played some games that were really scratched and never had a problem. My nephews abuse the hell out of their discs and they still work fine.

you can sometimes tell if a scratch is serious by shining an LED down the side of the disk (narrow edge) at the scratch, if you can see light where the scratch is it might be a bad one.
