I gave up hosting my own domain and email and switched to a hotmail account last year (I don't like gmail), but I'm getting tired of having to log-in just to check my mail.

If I want IMAP again do I gotta go back to my own domain, or can it be done with hotmail?

a quick googling shows that hotmail just supports pop3...i expect using their help function would have shown that as well.

so ... hotmail pop3 > google imap > email client ?

i like gmail and am familiar with the interface so...i just use the gmail web interface *shrug*

Last I checked, you could POP your hotmail email to another account, unfortunately you have to log in at least once a month (or every 3 months I forget which), in order to keep the account "alive", otherwise Hotmail will close the email account.

I tried it for a few days, but ultimately I went back to logging into the web interface.

i wasnt thinking earlier...but you *Can* use gmail to support your desired domain for email, and then just use imap with that account. so you can buy gmail support for mail.yourdomain.tld and get email through gmail to username@yourdomain.tld and then use IMAP for that

since you sound like you dont really want to host email, but wouldnt mind your own domain and want imap support that might be a good bet

Also a shame that you need an application to have Hotmail work with Microsoft Outlook. Hotmail needs its plumbing modernized.
