any way to update a LiveCD?

I have a DVD-R with Ubuntu 9.04 installed on it, and want to upgrade to 9.10 to see what all the fuss is about. Is there anyway to do it? I tried to update it last night via the update manager (in the applications menu) but it just downloaded program updates and didn't even install those correctly, claiming that it was out of space? 😕 my google skills have failed me as well.

If you are booting from the CD (DVD? really?) then no, you can't upgrade it. Download the 9.10 iso and burn it to a CD, or just run it in a VM.

Some distros have a LiveCD base which you can update if you make a LiveUSB with persistence.
Basically it is the LiveCD on a stick but changes you make make to it (Updates, settings, packages, etc) stick for the next time you boot into it.

Great little concept and it allows you to carry around your personalized OS to any computer without disturbing the contents of the host system's drive.

Install it to a hard drive, update to 9.10, then use remastersys to convert the install to a new Live CD. Or download an Ubuntu 9.10 CD or DVD and use that -- most of them will boot to a live environment.
