Any way to tell if this is really a 9800 pro?

Okay, I got went from an ATI 9600 PRO to a 9800 PRO for about 50 bucks when I sold my 9800 pro for the difference, but to tell you the truth, I have not seen any huge differences. I get about the same FPS for every single game I play. I play Enemy Territory and Call of Duty a lot, and I still get frame dips (under 30-40) which I am VERY unhappy about. I am averaging at about 100-150 FPS, but thats the same exact FPS that I got on my 9600 pro.

Is there any way that I can test that this is a true 9800 pro that I bought from someone, and not one of those 128 bit 9800 pros or something?

Thanks

search google for aida32, it will tell you whether your graphics memory is 128 bit or 256 bit under Display --> GPU.

thanks, it says bus width: 256 bit

I guess it is a real deal 9800 pro, but I guess it really just isnt that much better than the 9600 pro as I expected it to be :(

Is your memory in the shape of an "L"or an "I" configuration? If it's L, its a 256 bit memory bus. Now, as far as telling if you received an SE or not with 4 disabled pipes would be the next thing to check. Not sure how to do that with ATI.

I don't think that my A64 3200+ system is bottlenecking it.. :p

Sorry I didnt include my specs. (A64 3200+, Asus K8V SE, 1GB Corsair XMS PC3200, 160GB seagate sata)

I got this 9800 Pro from a friends Alienware. It says that its recognized as a 9800 PRO everywhere, but it just deffinetly doesent seem that much better than my old card. In fact, I am getting occasional frame dips which I never got, where it will be at 150fps running smoothly, and then 35fps with a lot of action on the screen, and gameplay is sometimes choppy, and not as smooth and fluent as I remember it being with my 9600 pro. Im just a little upset because I was expecting a little better performance, but I am getting just about the exact same performance as my 9600 pro, if not worse with these more occasional and noticable frame dips.

Could it be overheating or something? This thing is running really hot. Ever since putting it in, my CPU temps raised because of the heat and I can feel heat coming out from my front vents. I have plenty of fans, two blowing right on the 9800 pro. Whats a good tool to check video card temperature?

Thanks for the replys :)

I know your going from ATI to ATI, but try running driver cleaner anyway just to make sure you are getting all new fresh driver install for the 9800pro. Use the 4.9's.

Stuff to get a better indication of the performance difference:

3dmark 2003 (this should give you a very good indication of the difference between the two cards on your system)
Doom3
Far Cry
UT 2k4

etc.

I can tell you that the jump from 9600 series to a 9800pro is quite significant.

I had a 8500 and going to a 9600XT was not really a jump. However, going to a 9800PRO has been a HUGE boost.

I recently upgraded from a ti4600, very similar to a 9600, to a 9800pro and am extremely pleased with the (very noticeable) difference. Something sounds fishy, did you, as keysplayr2003 suggested, use the newest version of driver cleaner (3.2?)? Also might want to try the 3.10 cats; you say you play CoD a lot, and 4.x cats have a few well-documented problems with that game. Last thing, you have your latest chipset drivers?

IIRC you can't see the temperature of the 9800Pro since it doesn't have a thermal diode unlike the 9800XT/9600XT, but all the 9800Pros are hot because of their crappy stock HSF, after 15 minutes of playing Doom 3 or Painkiller my "Pro" becomes untouchable! (my guess is 85+ C)
You gotta check your 3DMark 03/Doom3/FarCry performance as Jeffy mentioned before, and install the latest Graphics/Chipset/Service Pack drivers.

edit: you can check your card's pipelines using either ATI Tool or Riva Tuner

I've ran Doom 3 and Facry and I can not run them on any better settings than I did before which I am very dissapointed in. I used to run Doom 3 on MEDIUM settings, and thats all I can run them on now, with about the same FPS (30-50 ranges) and I was hoping to atleast try running it on High, but the framerate is horrendous.

I will try using the driver cleaner.. To tell you the truth, I never uninstalled drivers, I just download them and install them. Should I start uninstalling them first, and then installing new ones or something? But anyway, dont both cards use the same drivers?

Ill run 3DMark03 on this computer and see what I get.

Thanks again for all the help! I really appriciate it :)

They don't use exactly the same drivers and yes, you have to unninstall drivers first before installing the new ones.
