*ANY* way to stop Windows XP Synchronising My Documents pointing to a mapped drive when logoff?

I have just formatted and reinstalled Windows XP on the family's PC, and I moved their documents over to the server to keep them safe during the format. I would like to now keep the documents on the server, and just point their "My Documents" to the server. However, when I do this, Windows seems to want to synchronise the damn folder EVERY TIME they log on and off :|

I have gone into the sync settings, and unchecked everything, but it still happens, and if by chance I do get it to not sync, the folders and ALL files still have those stupid little blue arrows in a white box on them :|

Thanks in advance for any help :)

What you have done is created a link from the desktop into the server, now everytime you log on or off the desktop computer will try to sync with the folder so that any open documents are properly put into the "My Documents" folder... there is nothing strange about that...

Why don't you want it to sync?

The problem is that any open documents will be saved straight back to the server, and I hate having that goddam icon on EVERY SINGLE file in My Documents!

Also, I have 3 users, and it's showing the "XXXXX's Documents" in the "Files Stored On My Computer" section of My Computer, and I don't care for any other files stored on the computer when logged in as me, only my own.

Uhhh... well, you want the documents saved on the server... you got the documents saved to the server... maybe you need to clarify, from what i see, you have no problems that you do not want to have...

Jeez, that is a small problem, now isn't it... so just hide the folders from other users...

The files MAY well be still saved back straight to the server, BUT they still had that icon. Which is a problem that I do not want.

And as for the second comment, the files are for seperate users, and the whole point for that (and mapping a drive) is that the other users can't see the files of everyone else, just theirs.

I found a solution to the problem anyway, by disabling Offline Files in the Offline Files section of Tools -> Folder Options.

WHAT icon do they have?

Second comment, the files may be for seperate users, but what rights do they have, obviously more than regular user rights as they can view other users folders... My guess would be that every user on your system has default rights, which is admin, you need to look into that...

Do these folders have any limitations even, i doubt it... i think you are trying to play admin but you don't have a clue of what you are doing...

I could walk you through it, but it's all on the net anyways, go search google... IOW... RTFM...

I can say the Confused does know exactly what he is doing. He's one of the more enlightened ones that hang out in the OS forum.

In Windows XP if you point your My Documents directory to a mapped drive on another server it automatically synchronizes them when the logoff. It does this in case you login and the server is down you will use the local copy of the files and then when the server comes back up it will synchronize. Turning off Offline folders will turn off this synchronization.

I use this at setting at home across our 3 PCs so that they save all their files to the server and they get backed up weekly.
