Any way to stop a Hard Drive from Whining?

well, i have a 60gb maxtor from a while back and a 4gb travelstar in an old laptop, and they both whine horribly, and it really annoys me. whenever i walk into hte room with the maxtor i feel like throwing it away, and i hate working with my laptop bc its so dang annoying. From what i have read, i know this is caused by overheating, so my question is, is there anyway to reverse this affect, and get the drive to stop whining? any help will be greatly appriciated!

whining drives are not always a sign of too much heat. if i were you i would try to rma the 60 gig maxtor and get a replacement. whining is a sign that the drive is getting old and just worn down. theres not much you can do really other than rma the drive in question (assuming its under warranty) or just deal with the noise.

too old to RMA, the thing doesnt even show up on the Maxtor site anymore... oh well i guess my brother and sister will just have to deal with it, no way im buying THEM a new drive...thanks anyway

Old laptop hard drives just whine, it's what they do. There are quieter models and I've noticed the old IBM's are REALLY loud. As for the maxtor, did you try running the acoustic management utility and setting it to quiet?

It does a better job with seeks than it does with whine problems, but it is still worth a try. It is on their website, I think it is under AMSET.
