Any way to see if my middle mouse button is still working?

In Firebird, my middle-click on my laptop opens in new tab. Or at least, it used to. It doesn't anymore. I want to see if my hardware is going bad or if firebird is fux0red. Is there a program that shows me which button is depressed as I would depress it?

It's a T40, I can't think of anything else that the middle button is wired to..there is no wheel

Install MS Intellipoint. I think it has a diagnostics screen.

It's a Synaptics device, not an MS device.

I'm probably wrong, but I'm not sure it matters.
Why would it ask me what my pointing device was when I went to download it if it didn't matter?
