Any way to SAVE MY RADEON 9600 pro??

After changing some fans in my case and rewiring, my sapphire radeon 9600 pro now refuses to let my system boot. (see post below for details)

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=1378995

Whenever I try to boot with this card in, all drive LED's stay lit and nothing happens; no beeps, hard drive hits, anything. I am sure that the video card is the problem, as I have tested another AGP card and it works fine.

I am not sure how I damaged the card while working in my case, but it is the only component that is failing. Has anyone had this problem with a video card before or maybe problems with this specific card? I have no other system to test the card in, but maybe it's a configuration issue?

I'm kind of freaking out because the card is only 6 months old, but bought on eBay with no documentation. Sapphire's support section is not very helpful, and I doubt they will fix it for free.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated

AGP or PCI ?, the post you linked, you said you put a PCI card in.

I bring it up cuz maybe it's not your 9600 (AGP) card, but the mobo's AGP slot.

Have you/can try the card in another system?

I dorked an agp card once (G4 Ti 4200), pulled it out when the standby power was on (PC turned off, but not unplugged). But doesn't sound like you did that.

Good Luck with it.

Dave Orton?

I've tested a different AGP and PCI card and they both work fine. I don't have another computer with AGP that I can test this card on.

I never work in my case with the power on.

Random factoid: other people have this problem with Sapphire cards:

http://www.sapphiretech.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3364&whichpage=1

After reading the posts in the Sapphire forum, I am skeptical that the card is dead. Other people are saying that they get a problem similar to mine, but can get their cards to work in other systems. The card seems to just not want to function with my mobo/bios/system anymore. I must have changed a setting or something while tinkering with my computer that my video card didn't like. I will try and flash the bios on my motherboard today. Hopefully that will get me somewhere.

Yeah. ATI is total FUD, NV is A-OK

J/K. They're both grade A.

I killed an 8500 once while working inside my case, but it artifacted instead of locking up the boot process like yours. Have you tried leaving your new case fans unhooked? maybe they are robbing power from the AGP slot needed by the 9600pro.

You definately need to try it in another comp just to be sure it is not dead.

strange revalation 1:

the 2nd agp card that i was testing with (which worked) now does not work after I try the radeon 9600 pro. Example: I tried to switch power supplies to see if that would help the matter. Used an old power supply with the test card and it worked fine. Then I used the original power supply and the test card: posted fine. swapped the test card with the radeon 9600pro: no post. swapped back to the test card: no post!

I think something with the radeon 9600 pro is messing with my motherboard or something, because it seems to be mess up my agp slot. maybe the power on the radeon 9600 pro is all fuzzy (explaining why the fan doesn't spin).

definitely . . . you need to rule out your PS and your MB as possible problems ;)

if your 9600 is bad, there is no choice but to upgrade. :(
(even a 9700p would be significant . . . but get a warranty)

PROBLEM SOLVED

I'm really stupid...reaplacing the PSU fan = the worst thing someone could do. Basically my PSU couldn't take the change in aperage or wattage that came along with the installation of the panaflo L1A. So now I have the fan hooked up to a connector on the motherboard instead of hardwired into the PSU. Serves me right for tinkering with my power supply. Now I know: buy the quietest, highest quality power supply and save yourself from a lot of headaches.

You can always mod the fan down to 7v or 5v, but something like a fanmate works too. silentpcreview.com is a good place to get info on such mods.
