Any way to repair Windows' TWAIN without buying this software?

TWAIN (image acquisition) support in Windows XP is somehow screwed up, preventing me from obtaining images from my scanner (the scanner does not show up in 'My Computer'). The described function of this software sounds like it is exactly what I need, but I'm not willing to spend money to fix a problem that I shouldn't even be having.

It's disappointing because I wasted two days getting my laptop configured perfectly and preparing to make a drive image, only to find that the scanner could not be properly installed. Temporarily installing software like this on my otherwise-clean installation would defeat the purpose of my fresh install.

Is there any way to find out exactly how this software is able to remove/reinstall TWAIN so that I can do it myself?

any idea what you did that might have screwed it up?

have you tried sfc /scannow to check for damaged or unrecognized versions of windows system files?

you can also try a windows repair from the windows xp cd...

I tried SFC /SCANNOW and it took a long time to scan, then the progress bar disappeared and the utility did not report it's findings. Next, I tried /RESTORE and was asked to restart. I restarted, then tried the scanner again.

No luck, it didn't work.

I was preparing to create an image. I do not yet have an image to restore from.

Looks like I'm going to have to waste two or three more days to reinstall, configure, and image my system.
