Any way to repair a corrupt file system?

I've got a friend's computer here, and he's got a 120gb drives, partitioned into a 14gb partition for the os, and a 99gb one for everything else. The 99gb partition is fine, but the 14gig one, the more crucial one, is not recognized under disk management. It says that it's healthy and active, but has no file system mounted on it. Is there any way to "repair" the file system, while not damaging or removing any of the files on the drive?

then a disk REPAIR should take care of the problem.

Yeah, it's an NTFS partition on WinXP. When you say disk repair, are you talking about a repair install or something else?

SMART tells me drive failure is imminent. I'm guessing that this is more than just a corrupt partition? 😛

I'll tell him to replace the drive, but exactly what do I do to recover whatever data was lost when the partition corripted? I tried using GetDataBack for NTFS 2.31, but it's only the trial version...any freeware software like that?

Haha, tell him he's screwed, gotta pay to get that data back and even that software may not work. If you find any freeware let us know because I know of none out there. Preach the backups!

I scanned the drive with the trial of GetDataBack for NTFS, and it finds most of the previous files...so they are recoverable. I'm going to have to acquire a license for it 😀

Have you seen this list yet?

Hard Drive Freezer Technique
This technique is useful due to thermal contraction of mechanical parts
1) Place drive in an anti-static bag
2) Put drive in freezer for at least one hour
3) Remove drive from freezer
4) Quickly install in system
5) Attempt data recovery

If bios does not recognize hard drive, then reboot and try again until that one time the drive is recognized. If this does not work, put drive in another system and hope the bios of the other system detects the drive.
