Any way to re-map a gamepad?

I want to change some of my buttons, for example make 'button 6' into 'button 5', because I just bought NHL 2005 and for some very foolish reason they don't let you configure ALL the buttons on your gamepad, only some of them. Since my gamepad has a rather unique numbering scheme, the forced buttons are all over the place. There's no utility for it from the manufacturer, in fact I can't even find a website because it's really a no-name brand. Any way to do it?
