This has got to be the most annoying thing that my computer does. (except for commit suicide on its partitions occasionally!!?!) anyways, my 5x DVD drive has a rather poor seek time. So whenever I open up my computer, or search for new drivers, even though I don't want to look at the cdrom only my hard-drive it HAS to look for the damn cd in the drive first witch takes like 15-20 seconds. Any way to make it so it only looks at the cd if I want it to??

Also when I insert a cd and I'm listening to mp3s the mp3s stop while it looks at the cd. That Sux!!

TIA.

I'm not sure if your CMOS settings will be able to fix this. I know that you can specify what particular device(s) you want your comp to look for when booting up ... but unsure whether this applies to your situation ... good luck though.

Suggestions:

1. ALWAYS leave a CD in your drive so Windows will not keep looking for new information.

2. Get new firmware from:

DVD/CDR firmware

If you have a generic drive, look for something unique on your drive like a model number or FCD ID. Then, use google or a good search engine to match your player.

3. Use Cacheman to speed up your system:

Cacheman direct link

4. Make sure your drive is not on the same IDE channel as your hard drive. My suggestion:

Primary Master: Largest HD
Primary Slave: Old HD if present
Secondary Master: DVD/CD-ROM
Secondary Slave: CD-RW
