Any way to open an MS IntelliMouse Explorer?

A kid happened to get chocolate onto the mouse wheels, and I'd like to be able to take it apart. Anyone ever taken apart an optical mouse like this?

i think if you are handy enough to build your own computer, this shouldnt be too difficult.

You'll void your warranty if you open it. You'll have to rip up the labels on the underside of the mouse to get to the screws that hold the mouse together. If you want to clean it, its pretty straight-forward...I've repaired mice in the past by cannibalizing parts as well as switching parts (like scroll wheels) b/c of personal preference...lotsa Franken-mice lying around before I got my MX700.

There's actually a thread in hot deals where you can fax the underside of your mouse to M$ and have the mouse replaced for free. Search for "mouse", "mice" or "microsoft" and you should be able to find it.

So I have to remove the little rubber pads? Or just the holographic MS label?

No, they're not underneath the pads. Rub the hologram and the serial # bar code with your finger or a pen cap and you should see the outline of a screw hole. There should be a screw underneath each of them. If you wanted to open it without causing too much damage, cut a cross (+) in the sticker and then peel back each quadrant. Only down side is that once you start using it again, the labels may cause annoying friction.

I'd still look to get it replaced before voiding your warranty.

The mouse was purchased from newegg in January 2002. I kinda of doubt that the warranty is still valid, but I could be wrong.

Its not through Newegg.

All you need is a photocopier and a fax machine.

Np, g'luck. I'd go ahead and make the copy of the bottom (a few) and then try to repair it yourself. It doesn't sound like they ask for your broken one back, so at that point it wouldn't hurt to try some self-maintenance. You'll also have spare parts as well.

if its an oem mouse you got from newegg, microsoft will not replace it for you. read the label underneath the mouse to see if its oem first.

The four mouse "feet" pads are each covering a small screw. No need to peel away the serial number sticker.
