Any way to make a folder NOT Deletable?

Kelemvor

Well, I had two Windows Explorer windows open on my computer yesterday and I accidentally deleted 3 months of video editing work. I don't want that to happen again so is there any way I can make a folder not deletable unless I manually go turn off whatever makes it not deletable?

It's my own machine and I'm obviously an admin so it'd have to be something I could turn on manually in some setting and would have to turn off manually if I actually wanted to delete the folder (or even anything inside of it).

Anyone know? I don't want something that just gives me a Yes or No prompt asking me if I'm sure because i get those all the time and never think fast enough to click No.

Thanks.

Do your video editing on a lower privledge level?

I know plenty of people who dont use administrator for day to day use

1. Yes running as a non-admin is a good idea; but wouldnt neccisarily solve the problem (if his user account has rights to delete the file he can still delete the file).

2. One way to do it would be to deny delete privilages on the file/folder's ACL, that way regardless of what account you were logged into the machine as you couldnt delete the file unless you first altered privilages and gave yourself the ability to delete them.

And how do I set those proveledges? Just remove it completely from Security under Properties like I do when granting permissions? hmm. I could try that.

Yup, go to the security tab and than click on advanced. Here you can set deny privilages for deleting the files/folders.

Convert the partition to NTFS.

It is NTFS already.

slow down maybe? Clicking yes or not right away on ANY Dialog box is bad. Take a few seconds and slow down, it will pay off on MANY Things in the end.

try going into safe mode and then look for the security tab

Open Windows Explorer
Tools -> Folder Options
View tab
Scroll all the way down, and uncheck "Use simple file sharing." You might need to reboot, but that will enable the Security tab for files and folders.

Ding Ding Ding. Winnar!

OK, now that I have my Security tab.... I need to be able to put things INTO the folder but want to limit so I can't delete things from the folder. Would Delete fall under Modify?

Or I could create a special group since Delete is an option in there. Never tried to be so specific when setting rights...
