Why do you want to make it backfire? You're going to have a real tough time getting it to happen if it's fuel injected.

Cars with carbs.-
Get to cruising speed, leave in gear, turn off ignition for a few secs, turn back on and blow off muffler.

I know how to do it when running....
As you're cruising along, switch the engine off, keep the throttle down slightly, so that petrol gets pumped though the system and into the exhaust. Turn the ignition back on to get the engine started, then as the fumes go through the exhaust, they'll light the petrol in there, and BANG as well as a little smoke
My dad did that whilst his friend was following him, his friend thought the car was fvcked!

There are 2 kinds: exhaust and intake.
Exhaust backfire may damage your muffler(s) or pipes.
Intake backfire (or carb) can blow up your carb and cause an engine fire or blow the intake manifold off the engine. Either way it can permently damage your engine.
Just run open headders. You'll see lots of exhaust backfiring, esp. if your mixture is off. The unburned mixture ignites in the exhaust and makes loud popping noises as well as flames.Originally posted by: notfred

Heh, never heard "backfire" used with exhaust before. The "back" in "backfire" refers to air moving the wrong direction - "back" throguh the intake.. the word doesn't make sense when used with exhaust.
I googled it though and it seems to be a fairly commonly used term... oh well.
