any way to get TV-out on a video card without TV-out?

My friend who's not a gamer picked up an old Gf2GTS that doesn't have a TV-out. But he wants to use his computer to output DVDs on his TV. Can he use a TV tuner card or something to get an S-video output? What are his options other than getting a new video card?

If its strictly for dvd playing, get a DXR3 pci card or something similar. It allows tv out when combined with a DVD drive.

You could get a D-SUB to component video cable adaptor, I think they make those. If you only have composite/S-Video then it'll be tougher.

A scan convertor will do the trick, but it'd be cheaper just to buy a better card that has s-video output onboard.

Yeah, on my HTPC i was using a Creative Labs DXR2 card for DVD-output and an Antec TVator Exec for desktop output. I think I paid about $90 for the TVator. It was kind of cool because it had a VGA pass-through and S-video/composite outputs.

The DXR2 had very nice video quality output. The TVator had noticeable color-banding during movies. I guess it would only convert to 16-bit color. 🙁

So, if watching DVDs is his only goal, he should pick up a DXR3 or one of those Hollywood cards.

If he wants to get some gaming in as well, he might want to grab a new video card. There's a lot of cards in the $85-and-below range that will outperform the GF2 GTS and have TV-outs. 😉

There are VGA to RCA composite/S-Video adapters...

I got one of those at home... my Dad used it all the time before to connect his laptop to the TV...
