Need for Speed 5: Porsche Unleashed (Electronic Arts) Yes W2000 06/01
Received the follow messages:
1) Works fine
2) I loads the first screen uses up about 900mb memory and then crashes i have a dual pii 400 with a tnt2 card using the 3.81 drivers. I deleted a file called gimme.dll and now it works fine, which make me wonder what that file does.
3) It runs fine with high textures and detail in 1024x768x32 on PII400 with 128Meg ram and ATI Rage Fury. It will not run past first screen on my other system with TNT2 using any driver version I can find.
4) At first won't even install, so I kinda gave up... A week later, new drivers for GeForce (Detonator513) and A3D (5.10.2500) came out, I installed both, they worked ok, so I decided to give NFS another shot and it worked!
5) System#1 - WORKS PERFECT WITH - Abit BP6, 128MB Crucial PC133 ram, 2 366MHz Celerons O/C to 550MHz each @100MHz bus, SBLIVE X-Gamer, 2.1GB 7200rpm Seagate SCSI HD, SCSI 5.2GB DVDRAM w/ DXR2 PCI decoder, 3com 10/100 PCI NIC, Voodoo3 3000 AGP, Adaptec 2940UW card, standard 1.44MB floppy. Win2KPro.
system#2 - WORKS PERFECT WITH - Asus P2B-LS, 256MB Crucial PC133 ram, 1 366MHz Celeron O/C tO 567MHz @103MHz bus, SBLIVE X-Gamer, 18.2GB 10000rpm Seagate Ultra2 SCSI HD, 8X Plextor SCSI CDR, Intel 10/100 NIC, Voodoo3 3500TV AGP, Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI PCI card, IDE LS120 Floppy. Win2KPro.
system#3 - WORKS PERFECT WITH - Abit BX6R2, 128MB Crucial PC133 ram, 1 366MHz Celeron O/C to 458MHz @83MHz bus, SBLIVE X-Gamer, 9.1 7,200rpm
Seagate IDE HD, 6X Creative Labs IDE DVD w/DXR3 PCI decoder, 3com 10MB
NIC, Creative Labs TNT2 Ultra, standard 1.44MB floppy. Win2kPro.
System#4 - DID NOT WORK WITH -Abit BP6, 256MB Crucial PC133 ram, 2 366MHz Celerons O/C to 550MHz each @100MHz bus, SBLIVE X-Gamer, 20.5GB 7,200rpm IBM IDE HD, Toshiba 48X IDE CDROM, Linksys 10/100 PCI NIC, Voodoo3 3000 AGP, standard 1.44MB floppy. My system#4 kept getting an error that used up 900MB of memory and then would crash. I rebooted, ran defrag, then set the initial paging file size to 256, and the maximum to 500, rebooted again, and it works PERFECT now! Although it fixed this problem, I dont know what other problems it may create from adjusting the paging file to this particular size on a system with 256MB of ram. Probably none.
6) 3dsetup won't detect the Voodoo2s even if you modify the 3dsetup.ini. It must be changed in the registry. To get this working, got into registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed
Set entry "Group" to "Glide"
Set entry "Trash driver" to "Voodoo2"
Works just great with my SLI!
7) Sometimes renaming the gimme.dll doesn't fix the lockup problem. Ive found the best way to fix it is to use the nocd patch available on different websites. This has always fixed it for me.
7) works on Win2k SP1 as stated on your review page, using 3D Prophet II MX and Asus K7V, 128MB ram. One note is the UK release lists Windows 2000 as a supported OS, so any problems can be directed to manufactrer.
8) Deleting gimme.dll as mentioned might be a bad idea and the nocd patches did not solve the "memory leak" problem for me. I solved it by setting page file to min=200 and max=200. Without gimme.dll multiplayer doesn't work. At least not peer to peer IP.
9) This game does NOT work under Windows 2000 SERVICE PACK 2. It works only under Service Pack 1. First Game to be incompatible with SP2!
10) This game DOES work under Windows 2000 SERVICE PACK 2. The only thing i had to do was to delelete/rename gimme.dll Setting Virtual Memory to a fixed from...to value doesn't prevent it from crashing. NFS5 allocate 600MByte RAM (i have 768MByte installed) and then crashes if the gimme.dll is not removed.
11) UK version (Porsche 2000) works fine on Win2k SP2. Asus Geforce2 GTS, and Asus A7V133A, 256MB ram. Had the memory leak problem (used 700MB). Solved it by setting page file to min=256 and max=512.
12) Works under 2000 and SP2 if you set your virtual memory/paging file at maximum 500MB or less
13) game does NOT work under sp2 as stated before installing SP2 then installing nfs5 makes NFS crash during startup with the following message
http://xlr8shun.dyn.dhs.org/nfs5-1.gif clicking the yes button takes you to the desktop, clicking the no button takes you to this screen
http://xlr8shun.dyn.dhs.org/nfs5-2.gif then clicking ok takes you to the desktop, i havent tried installing nfs5 running it, and _then_ installing sp2 if anyone cares to try that specific combo let me know, and if any one else cares to try to do a fresh install, then install sp2 _then_ install nfs5 reply back here, im willing to bet it dont work though im thinking you need to install nfs5 before you install sp2
14) Under SP2 you simply have to delete or rename gimme.dll file form Porche directory and it works. Online games no longer work though. No other change in settings was needed on my system.
15) I noticed all the work/don't work comments and I thought I'd offer my 2c as well. I've seen three setups where NFS works. Atleast two of them have the pagefile locked to 384MB (min/max). (256MB physical memory on both configs) The third rig has 512MB of phys. memory, and I don't know what the pagefile is set to. My own setup is NVidia GeForce2 MX, 256MB RAM, 1.13GHz Athlon, Win2k SP2 (NFS also worked fine with SP1). My buddy had problems until he (like me) locked his pagefile size. His setup is a GeForce256, lower speed Intel CPU and Win2k SP1. (he tried to downgrade to SP1 before he finally tweaked pagefile size) I've tried various NVidia drivers. 6.50 works fine, I'm on 7.97 now and it too works fine (some stitching on some courses, but barely noticable). I guess what I'm trying to say -- this game has some memory allocation issues, tweaking pagefile settings seem to alleviate that. (this btw reflects poorly on EA's developers and QA -- two patches now and both left this unfixed?)
16) Installs fine, locks when executed. ASUS/P3/SBLive/SP2
17) Installs fine yet will not run under normal circumstances, must delete or rename "gimme.dll". sp2,asus,p3 550, geforce2 mx agp
