Any way to force tv-out on ATI Mach64 when tv is "not detected"?

I'm trying to hook up an older laptop's tv-out through my vcr (tv doesn't have s-video or component input), but the ati properties says I'm not connected (thanks ati!).

Any way to force it to enable tv-out? I'm not even sure it will work, since I don't know for sure if it's s-video only output or composite too.

The chipset is an ATI Mach64...
