Any way to cure hesitation in Diablo 2?

I am experiencing very annoying hesitations every few seconds in D2. They are most pronounced when a new game event happens (e.g., a new spell, death animation, etc.), when the game pauses for as much as 2 seconds. Even just running around on a map, there are slight pauses constantly.

The relevant details of my system are:

P3 600E at 732 on a Soyo 6BA+IV
128 MB PC133 SDRAM
Voodoo 3 3000
SB Live! X-Gamer

Anyone have any ideas?

One thing you can do is copy the D2Music.mpq file from the Diablo II play disc to the Diablo II directory. This will stop the game from having to access the CD-ROM for music. Cut my CD-ROM access to zero during the game, and got rid of any big hesitations.
