I have activated Win10 virtual machine running in VMware. Looks like I completely forgot to write down the key that I used to activate it (that was really dumb of me). Is there any way to know the key that was used to activate Windows 10? In the past with Windows 7 I used produkey to look up activation key, but it does not work on windows 10 for me now. It just returns generic Windows 10 key and not the actual key I used to activate the installation.

I would do that with Belarc Advisor.

Once you enter that key, that is stored server side, nothing client AFAIK, then you get the digital license.

Win 10 does not keep A Real Key on the client Installation.

The Activation process picks up hardware info (mainly the Motherboard) and store the Activation info on MS activation server.

When you check activation The activation server checks online your Hardware Info and amtch it to the original Activation hardware. If it fits it will keep it Activated (or would Reactivate).

If it does not work on line then you have to call MS activation support. +1-888-636-5145

This page gives info about VMware installations.
