What is it that you hate so much about dorm living? Maybe you can actually work things out with Student Housing rather than trying to run away from your problems.

And don't think that living in an apartment will be that much better, considering the same people from the dorms will be moving there too.

Here is what you do, get an apartment ready. Put it under your moms name and yours. Say that you are living with your mother and since her name is on the lease, you can get off the hook.

Come out of your shell. Stop trying to be shy. The reason this policy exists is to help you learn to cope in social environments. Get a fvcking roomate, make some friends and just hang out. Stop being a damn geek so much. Being shy is the easy, being outgoing and social is hard, stop taking the easy road in life.

I second that. Half of college is having fun and meeting new people. That won't happen in your room. Where are you going, out of curiousity's sake? :)

<< College is about more then just academics. It is also about developing the social skills you will need when you venture out in to the world. You have the opportunity to do so in a somewhat protected environment. Use that opportunity. >>

I could never agree more. I spent one year living away at school and it changed me a lot. My advice would be to just suck it up and live in the dorms, you might change to and learn to be less shy.

You're going to have to come out of your shell. I have had so much fun in the dorms this year that I am actually planning on coming back next year. I'm going to be sad when college is over!

BTW I used to be the most shy kid imaginable! Just terrible...I loathed every waking MOMENT of high school. You just need to take that one step and it all changes.

Russ,

Living in a co-ed college dorm has only made my social skills 10x worse. It has also proven true most of the things that I assumed about people my age, especially girls. Now I've become one of the most cynical people in the world. Kill me now

I'm going to a community college right now but I have visted friends away at school and spent like 5 days there and I am planning on doing it here again. It was great and tons of fun staying in the dorms. We went out and partied (I don't drink) and I had soooo much fun and I was the only sober one at the party. I am transfering to this school after next year and I can't wait.

<< Pay the dorm fee, but live off campus in an apartment.

What are they going to do, check your bed to make sure you're sleeping there?

Actually, if you got the $$ or the influence... you can always avoid this policy... I knew some people when I was in college that didn't ever live in the dorms.

EDIT: getting a good dorm environment is luck of the draw... some dorms are close knit and friendly communities... others are a conglomeration of annoying, self-centered idiots.

If the campus is big enough and they don't know how every student looks like, and they don't practice nazi identification methods, you can just rent out the dorm appartment to a good friend instead. Do make sure it's someone who won't make a mess of it, or you'll have to clean it up/pay the bill!
