Well,

our housing policy says that you must live in dorms for 2 years or until you have earned 90 credits ... or you can live with your parents ...

but I'm kind of really shy person, and living in dorms my freshman year .. and I hate it ... (it just the way I am) ...

is there any way to be able for me to rent an apartment for next year?

thx

I'd say at least stick it out for the rest of the year, if not the first 2 years. For the most part, it's a good thing.

Pay the dorm fee, but live off campus in an apartment.

What are they going to do, check your bed to make sure you're sleeping there?

Viper, that's waaay too expensive (that's another reason I want to rent an apartment) ... they also make us(who lives on campus) buy a meal plan ... from which I don't eat anything :|

Dorms can be for shy and outgoing people alike.
If you can get a single room, it would definitely help you though.

I spent one year in a dorm, and I did enjoy it.

OK, my school's the same way. Only you have to live on campus all four years (sucks, huh?).

Here at Geneva, it's really hard to beat the system. They will call and hound you until they figure out where you're at and if you're really living with your parents or not. One of my friends is beating the system, but has spent much time running from the administrators.

Viper--The whole reason students want to live off campus (usually) is to NOT PAY the dorm fees. They're always too high. So, it would be pointless to pay both dorm fees and apartment rent.

hergehen,

College is about more then just academics. It is also about developing the social skills you will need when you venture out in to the world. You have the opportunity to do so in a somewhat protected environment. Use that opportunity.

My school has trouble covering all housing, so, while they require the freshman to live on campus, I had a friend who found himself an apartment, informed the higher ups, and they let him off, grateful to have one less person to take care of.

I guess the grass is always greener. I wish I had had the chance to live in a dorm when I first got to school.

listen to him. I didnt want to live in the dorms my freshman year either, but it turned out to be one of the better times of my life. There is NOTHING like going to one of the floors at 3am to see 2 guys race each other on bikes nude through the hallways that had been toilet papered minutes before :)

I think i still have the video of that somewhere...

And yet you've managed to pinpoint the exact reasons I hated living in the dorm. Strange...

Wise advice, you'd do well to listen to him.

I'd think the other people at your school would have a better idea of how to beat the housing system than those on some bulletin board. You should really be asking the people around you for advice on this, maybe even some of the people in your dorm: "So, how can I get away from you all?" :D

Being forced to be around other people is the most effective way of learning to be with (stand?) them. If you can't beat the system, try to find someone you know would be a decent roommate and bunker in with them and tough out the dorm life together.

My $0.02.

how's he supposed to do that? he's too shy....

when i lived in the dorms, single rooms were notoriously known for having people with "social problems." I'm not talking about smelly ppl either...

Yeah, I didn't want to mention the catch-22 in there but as you pointed out:

Forced living will go away, but you'll always be around people.

That's really not too bad then. I swear.
Try it for one year, maybe you will lose some of your shyness.
Just remember, there are many other shy people out there...

Colleges are often very strict, I do not know if you can cheat yourselves out of it.
Good luck in any case!!!

Bingo. And while we're at it, how about the morons who insist on dribbling a damn BASKETBALL up and down the hallway (and against my door :| ) at 03:00 in the fvcking morning? I also love it when some drunken bastard comes banging on my door in the middle of the night. Waking up with a violent start and jumping three feet above the bed is such fun. I won't even mention the communal bathrooms.

Despite that, I'm staying in the dorms. They are convenient, my single is air conditioned, and the philosophy discussions with the guy next door are nearly as interesting as the discussions I have with LinuxBoy.

Get a doctor's note, tell them it's against your religion, get a parent down there to yell at someone, find out what will get you kicked out of the dorms (but not school) and do it, or change schools. Dorm living is cool if you are an immature punk kid, otherwise it sucks.
