Any way to boost cell phone reception in an apartment?

For those of you that helped me get a cell phone, thanks! Now I'm looking to move into a basement apartment, and reception isn't the best. Can I get an antenna or something like that to plug into it and boost the signal?

I don't think there's really anything that works. There are lots of gimmicks you can find on the internet, but I doubt any of them really work. Thick walls and lack of cell towers will get you every time....

i wonder how many it takes to cover an entire apartment wall....

I dunno, you can pick up cases of them on ebay for pennies apiece (if that).

funny thing is, you still get the "do those really work?" comment, once and a while :)

If you wallpaper your appartment in tinfoil and run a 12v current through it it might work :)

But yeah um i dont think u can really get passed that unless u can rig some sort of external antenna? If you live in a modern building with aluminum studs in the wall then i suppose ur trapped in a fairday's cage (spelling?) and it blocks out waves ....something like that from physics i remmeber ... heh

The way a cellphone works is that it receives a radio signal from a cell tower. Believe it or not a radio wave is line of sight and if you are out of sight without a window then you would have to run a line to outside and connect it to your phone :)

Yeah, something like that. Has no one done this before or something?

I'm curious about this too! I'm on the first floor, with a window. Still no reception. And I live in a major city!!!!!

While this doesn't help for using the phone for a conversation since you have to pick up the phone, this suggestion works well for getting Voicemail and SMS messages. Place the phone on the top of your refrigerator. The big hunk of metal acts to concentrate some of the radio energy just enough most of the time to get minimal service. I have already proven this many times.

Edit: This also works for Blackberry (RIMS) too.

I don't believe that you are correct here... RF doesn't require line of site to work. RF will go through walls/rooms.

There's couple sites out there that sells little repeaters for home use. They run 600+ dollars though, I believe.

You can find something that will do the trick there I believe.

I wonder why these aren't more popular for home use? I mean, why wouldn't they, cell phone antennas are pretty popular on automobiles.
